Final Dragon-Fire Warrior X - September 24, 2001 - Brooke Bolander Disclaimer: The opinions expressed within this column are those of the participants and the moderator, and do not necessarily reflect those of the GIA. There is coarse language and potentially offensive material afoot. Here comes sickness, walkin' down the block. Don't say we didn't warn you. I'm sick. I need sleep. I'm fighting back vomiting. And I don't feel like discussing DWVII. The show must go on, however. In some capacity. I want ICO more, though. | Hey Brooke, Be sure to slap Drew around later for giving you this topic. As for how I feel about DW 7 showing up, I couldn't be happier. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge DQ fan by any means. However, the release of any above-average RPG is reason for celebration in my hole in the wall I call home. DW 7 will most likely not sell more than a couple hundred thousand copies in the US simply because it will get zero press/POP and will only be purchased by people who know what it is. Same goes with the equally high-quality Hoshigami (though that game will be lucky if it sells 50,000 copies). However, it's no big deal. The fact that it's getting released at all is enough to brighten my day. - Dark Schneider | Oh don't worry, I will. I think the attack being launched by rabid J-Poppers will probably be enough to sate my lust for revenge, though. Anyway, any fairly obscure RPG being released in the US despite the fact that only 5 people will buy it is good in my book. I'll probably end up buying it just because...well, they released it, and it looks pretty good. Beggars can't be choosers, you know. Did someone say "HARDCORE?" | You know what? Nobody can convince me that Dragon Warrior 7 is really coming out. Even if it does, the people who'll buy it will be very few, because DW fans spend all their time screaming at FF fans and game sites that aren't "HARDCORE" enough over the computer. - Gilbert | Now now, it's not like the Square fans aren't exactly the same way about their beloved Final Fantasy series. I've seen enough frothing-at-the-mouth FF fanatics to know it is not just an Enix thing. If the DW fans are screaming at the FF fans, you can be sure they'll be yelling back. I find them both equally annoying, personally. Can't we all just get along? Think of it - a world where FF and DW fans run through dungeons hand-in-hand. Beautiful. You didn't do your homework. | I forget what today's topic is supposed to be; Japan fanboy bashing or something like that maybe. But I've got another question. If video games like Street Fighter and Fatal Fury can make the leap into animation, why can't the Final Fantasy series? I know that they are half cartoon already, but would it hurt to condense them into a 90 minute movie. No expensive CG, just good old fashioned anime. Just leave out a few characters and all that level building and I imagine that most of the series (esp. 6 & 9) would translate into the medium quite well. It's not like Squaresoft wouldn't make a ton of money in the process. It's not like Squaresoft doesn't need a ton of money after FF:TSW bombed. - Alabama Spank Admiral | Er, I hate to make you look like an ignorant slut in front of God and everyone, but they already have. It was loosely based on the FFV world, and wasn't very good, or so people say. Watch at your own risk. There's also another Final Fantasy animated series coming out soon, but only on Japanese television. I'm sure it'll eventually get released over here in one form or another, so...there you go. I don't think they'll be making/releasing any animes to the big screen here, though (especially after the TSW fiaco) so you'll have to be satisfied with what you can get. Yeah, we SuX0rz. | Why is it that you and Drew (Or at least Drew) always seem to say how bad the X-box is, and then act as if it is fact? I mean, I think your both pretty cool, but that is REALLY lame. There is no such thing as a right or wrong opinion, so quit acting like it. And why does everyone say the X-box will fail? And I keep hearing how"If the X-box does win, its because of sneaky marketing tactics". Bill Gates uses no more sneaky tactics then Sony or Nintendo- he just gets the spotlight shined on his more. And another thing: If the X-box succeeds, maybe its because THE GAMES ARE GOOD! And for those who keep saying"X-box has only bad games". We haven't even seen 10% of the games the system will have, so how can you judge? Same with the Gamecube. In other words, this is a long ramble that gets to a totally unrelated point to readers: FOR THE LOVE OF GECKOS, YOUR OPINIONS ARE NOT FACTS! Thank you and have a nice day:-). | First of all, paragraphs are good. Don't shun then, love them. Same thing with spelling and grammar - trust me, they will come in handy when trying to decipher that pink slip you've just been handed at McDonalds. Okay, now's the part where I pick apart your letter like an African vulture going through the lower intestine of a dead poacher. Ready? Good. Let me get this straight - there's no such thing as a right or wrong opinion? Alright then, it's my opinion that I should be able to gut you and use your bladder as a useful, watertight storage bag for those long hikes in the wilderness. It'll keep my clothes safe from any exterior dampness, and if I need to haul water from a creek, the ever-useful bladder bag can do that too. ...What? Why are you looking at me that way? It's an opinion, and no opinion is wrong, right? If you had actually presented some facts in this letter, I might go easier on you, but when all you say is "youre wrong!!!11 X-box is gonna be kewl!!" I have to scoff. Fugghead of the Week, folks. And it's only Monday! Problem... | This is in response to Drew's comment, "I don't know who this man thinks is going to be buying all of these Xboxes". I thought the same thing originally. None of my friends, or anyone I know for that matter, are excited about Xbox or have one reserved. I was sure that Xbox was going to be a total failure, but one day I was talking to one of the guys at the local GameStop and he told me that somewhere around 120 Xboxes had been reserved at this store alone. That is an amazing number considering this store is in Zanesville, Ohio (a town I'm sure no one has heard of) and I don't even think they could fit 120 Xbox systems in the store. Interestingly enough, my friend who was with me asked about reserving a GameCube and they told him that they had to stop taking reservations after the first 15. Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't Nintendo expected to ship a lot more GameCubes than MS will ship Xboxes? How then does it make sense that the store can take 120 Xbox reservations and only 15 for GameCube? - Brian Ewing, Irate GameCube Fan | Well, here's the question... ...Solution. | As for the sales bias issue yesterday regarding the Xbox and the GameCube, it isn't about MS throwing its weight around so much as stores pushing what's available. Nintendo hasn't allowed retail outlets to officially take GC preorders, while MS's Xbox program started weeks ago. This means any store clerk pushing the GC to customers is pushing something he can't sell - not what he's paid by the company to do. Any store manager pimping the Xbox has a district or regional manager breathing down his neck to get those presell numbers as high as possible so the high-margin software can be sold to as many people as possible. Once all the systems are out and widely available, then clerks can afford to be honest. But not before then. ;] -Ed M. | ....And there's your answer. Leave it to Ed, eh? Closing Comments: Guess what comes out tomorrow? C'mon, guess! ...Oh what the hell, I'll guess for you. ICO? Yes, ICO! Wonderful glorious ICO! Do you think it's gonna be as good as it looks! Do you have a copy reserved? ICO ICO ICO! Write in about ICO! ...Erm, sorry. I feel like I'm about to throw up over my keyboard, so any insanity is fever-induced. See you tomorrow, hopefully. - Brooke Bolander, who needs a hug and an injection of morphine right now. |
