The Saikyo style may be weak, but there's strength coursing through today's artwork! Ugh, and cheese flowing through my intro.
This set of images swings the pendulum in compensation for last week - nearly half the art is from Final Fantasy VII and VIII (with a few pics from IX, but those are tucked neatly away in the spoiler gallery for safe-keeping). There's so much Final Fantasy art, in fact, that I'm going to use it as an excuse to segue into a topic I've been meaning to address for a while....
The Sketch Artist gallery is, above all, a forum for your artwork, a public place for RPG fan artists to show off their skills, draw inspiration from their peers and earn a little recognition. But at the same time, it's also a collection of artwork covering a wide array of games, and shouldn't be dominated by any single title. Of course the most popular games and characters will be drawn more than other games - which is as it should be. But sometimes a game's popularity can force compromises as well, as with this update.
When I receive an huge number of submissions from a single game, not all of them will be posted. I use many criteria when making selections, but two of the most important are, "How many images from this game are already going up?" and "Is this style/character/artist already heavily represented?" I ended up dropping a lot of Final Fantasy related art for this update: something which I hated doing, but which had to be done.
I don't say this to dictate what you can and can't draw, because I don't want to stifle creativity - always follow your muse first and foremost. Instead, I offer these suggestions to help improve the chances that the great art you create will be seen by others. Don't be afraid to look for inspiration in games that stray from the beaten path, as with Ammo's drawing of Sakura Wars' Oogami or Kouryuu's portrait of the always-adorable Arche from Tales of Phantasia. It wouldn't be Sketch Artist without a little Sephiroth - but surprises are always welcome!
So, enjoy the art! And if you ever have any questions or comments, please feel free to write.
