Holy cats, you guys are prolific.
Even switching to a weekly schedule, this update still includes three full galleries of art. Yow! But I'm certainly not complaining - it's all great stuff. There's an excellent selection, too - only 6 pieces come from a Final Fantasy game, which has to be some kind of record. Not that I dislike Final Fantasy (far from it) but I really enjoy seeing other games being interpreted by fan artists.
I need to spend a brief moment on the topic of spoilers in art. This job didn't come with a manual, so I'm learning through the best teacher of all: mistakes. After posting some vaguely-game-spoiling material last week, I've been asked to begin protecting innocent young eyes from too-revelatory images. So, with feedback from the rest of the staff, I have developed a policy for dealing with spoilers.
Different people have different ideas of what constitutes a spoiler, so ultimately I have to exercise some judgment. Here's the plan: beginning with this update, there will be a special "Spoiler Gallery" where spoiler-ish pieces will be placed. Each of these galleries will contain images that fall within certain criteria, and the pictures within will be grouped by title so you can skip only to games you're comfortable with. These rules are:
- Any art from any upcoming game which has not yet been released
in America is now considered a spoiler. These will be placed in
the Spoiler Galleries. The exception: games that will most likely
never be released in the US, so feel free to send in as many
explicit plot spoilers from Sengoku Turb or Rudra No Hihou as you
want.
- Any art which depicts plot spoilers for games which have been
available in the US for less than 3 months will also be placed in
the spoiler gallery. For instance: pics of Aeris' death in Final
Fantasy VII will be in the normal galleries. Pics of Serge and Mojo
from Chrono Cross playing Scrabble will be placed in the normal
galleries. Pics of major plot events in Chrono Cross, however,
will be listed in the Spoiler Galleries until mid-November.
- Any art which contains spoilers in the comments area but not
the art will appear in the regular galleries with a warning.
- Any art which contains spoilers in the title will appear in
the Spoiler Galleries for three months after the game's US release.
I realize this isn't a perfect scheme (it's US-centric, it leaves a lot of grey area, blah blah blah), but there's simply no way that everyone will be happy with any decision. So if you want to change it, you'll have to round up the angry villagers to come chase me out of this job with pitchforks and torches. Until then, you'll have to settle for this compromise.
Naturally, no one sent in anything spoiler-ish this time (d'arrrgh!), so I made up a Chrono Cross-related image to give the new system a test. Anyway, enjoy the art, spoiler-ish or otherwise, and feel free to share your thoughts on this topic. And don't forget to read the Submission Guidelines before sending in your work!
