Grandia confirmed for US PSX release (again)

[02.05.99] » It's really happening. Oh sweet, heavenly bliss.

As reported earlier, Grandia has been picked up by SCEA for U.S. localization. Many were quick to dismiss this as an impossible rumor, however, and would "believe it when they see it."

Well, they'll be seeing it soon enough. A source close to the GIA has confirmed that Grandia is indeed being ported to the Playstation and will indeed be published in the U.S. by SCEA. We at the GIA were skeptical ourselves, at first, but after this second testimonial, the game is as good as announced.

Some gamers are confused, as it was previously believed that Grandia couldn't be done on the Playstation. Originally a Saturn title, the massive amounts of texture data were believed to be unportable (due to the Playstation's smaller texture RAM). Late in the Playstation's life, however, new libraries and methods of optimization have made the conversion possible.

But the technical minutiae are irrelevant; gamers of all persuasions should be thankful that an all-time RPG classic, once believed lost, will be reaching U.S. shores. It is a good time to be an RPG player, indeed! Until SCEA releases more details, let our coverage of the Dreamcast sequel entertain you.
