DigiCube to sell Game Boy titles
[02.08.01] » Square-owned game and merchandise distribution system to begin selling games for Nintendo's portable juggernaut.
The expansion plans of Square continued today with the announcement that the company's DigiCube distribution service would begin selling Game Boy software, including titles by market rival Enix, developer of the famed Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) franchise. DigiCube kiosks are available in convenience stores across Japan.
``Given its increasing popularity, we felt it necessary to cater to Game Boy,'' a Digicube spokesman said. ``It is based on market judgement.''
The move comes on the heels of an expanded development schedule and expressed desire to develop for Nintendo's upcoming Game Boy Advance. Offering Game Boy titles for sale will be the company's first business dealings with Nintendo products of any type since the 1996 move to the PlayStation.
Square also stated that the widening of the expansive DigiCube service will increase sales of the Game Boy titles offered when they become available next month. It is unclear whether Nintendo was required to approve the carrying of their products by DigiCube, but regardless of official approval, the move signals a further thawing of the ice between the two gaming giants.
