Would you buy the Chrono Trigger revision for the Playstation? It seems that most would. In fact, that's the topic of today's column. Fancy that.

It's not a remake

First of all the re-release of CT is NOT a remake. You can call it a PSX Port, or a re-release, but in no way is it a remake. Yeah, I know, you're thinking "What the %@#$% does it matter you anal-retentive bastard?", but calling the CT re-release a remake is putting it on the same level as Lunar:SSSC. Now that was a REMAKE. CT on the PSX is basically an imperfect port of an SNES game with extra anime scenes. That's not a remake.

I don't plan on buying it, unless Square puts like 30 minutes of anime in it and/or adds some other super-cool feature like a soundtrack CD. I already have the true SNES version of CT, and I can just download the anime scenes from the internet (namely, the GIA). I'm not saying Square shouldn't release it, though, because it'll give younger RPG'ers or ones who just got into RPG's a chance to experience a role-playing classic.

In the words of an understated and wise old man, "You are correct, sir." The distinction is certainly there, as the differences between a true remake and a true port are substantial. However, like so many other words which have come to lose their ultimate meaning over time, most have come to use the two terms interchangeably.

But allow me to play Devil's advocate for a moment. While it could be argued that the actual game engine and in-game graphics haven't been altered, and hence the game is merely a port, the addition of anime cutscenes do make the PSX version different from the SNES version. If only in that respect. To be a port to the most minute definition of the word would entail that the game be completely unaltered in any shape, form or fashion. And that isn't the case thanks to those fancy ol' anime clips.

Whether you'd consider the PSX Chrono Trigger to be a port or a remake, I leave to your own discernment. Both conditions could be effectively argued in favor of.

Getting back to the subject at hand, PSX CT will have but a paltry 20 minutes of anime, so I guess you'll be disappointed on that front. As for any extras or additions, there is an exclusive Playstation ending to be tracked down, as well as an omake mode, the contents of which remain unknown at this point.

Buying into it

I loved the game for the SNES,and can't wait for the PSX version. Heck,I'd buy it even without the anime cut-scenes,though they certainly wouldn't hurt. I never got around to collecting every ending,so now I'll have my chance. And no,Square is NOT doing this out of the bottom of their hearts. Sound Business Policy #1: It never hurts to have a little more yen. Get my point?

-Carlitos Way 99

I can understand purchasing the game simply because you want to see the anime cutscenes which Mister Toriyama has crafted for the PSX version of it, but I have to be honest. What the hell is the point of purchasing a game which you already own when there's absolutely nothing new or original about it, making it somehow distinctive? I'll never understand what compels people to buy the same games repeatedly simply because of the name on the jewel case.

But, then, it seems to work for the Tomb Raider series. I guess there's certain things we're not meant to understand.

Blast those sirens

Hello evil one

Is the CT remake just a lame way for Square to cash in and jump start a franchise before CC, while toying with the hardcores? Yes. Will I buy it? Hell yes! Do you want to know why? ANIME MAGUS! Magus was so cool, he screams "shove me in some sort of anime." But if we don't get to see him fight someone in an anime scene (maybe during the ending where him and Frog fought?), I'll personally see to it that numerous feet are firmly shoved up the asses of many Square employees.

Yes Drew, I killed your family....even your dog snuffles

-Justin Freeman

Yes, anime Magus, you've got to love that. I'm surprised that he didn't receive his own 5 part anime series over in Japan. Every brooding, melodramatic anti-hero deserves at least that. Frog can stay a filthy little slimeball to the end of eternity for all that I care. Missing out on the 5 whole seconds in which you get to see Frog as a rather effeminate human is a small price to pay in exchange for having Magus join your party.

The only thing that keeps Magus from transcending to the upper-echelon of ubercoolness is that intensely obtrusive and rather idiotic-looking chastity belt thing that he wears. I just don't think that any of the lady-folk are going to be so overzealous in their attempts to jump his bones that the metal briefs are necessery. The outside-of-the-pants thing he's got going on just doesn't help the matter any.

Oh, by the way, I don't have a dog named Snuffles. You must be thinking of my next-door neighbors -- which would certainly explain all of the sirens that I heard outside of my window late last night. If you're going to wax a man's family, you should at least get his address straight. However, you still managed to inconvenience me; it was hell trying to get some sleep thanks to all of those sirens and flashing lights, courtesy of the myriad of patrol cars lining my street. I suppose most people would have gone outside to see what was going on, but fresh air just makes my skin crawl.

Don't mess with those realists

Hey Drew,

I'm a realist. You know, the people who look at life not in rose-tinted glasses, I see the way things really work. Example being not buying a system until good games come out on them first. One who doesn't fall for hype is another example. Being smart, basically = being a realist*.

Anyway, point of letter, I want the CT Remake to be sent over here. I enjoyed the game a lot the first time around, and unlike most, I never got all of the endings. Another is the fact that all CG FMV, anime, ect. is just about reason enough to me to get the game(I have a "reward" fetish). So if Square wants to milk a franchise and it happens to net me some good games, by all means I'll let them. Besides, I know many people were not into RPGs until after the Playstation and they probably never got to time travel with Crono and company. The larger the fan base of RPGs = the more quality RPGs find their way over here. Everyone is happy. End of story.

*it usually also means that we're arrogant.

I can't tell you how relieved Square, Inc. was to find that you were willing to let them commense the creation of a Chrono Trigger game for the Playstation game console. It would seem that their attempts to appease your many fetishes have paid off, as you've given them the go-ahead on this project. Don't worry, I'm not allowed to mention your depraved sexual preferences in the column; it's part of my contract as the Official Undercover Operative. My contract also states that I must refer to the PSX as the "Playstation game console" when speaking on behalf of Square.

Sarcasm aside, there are some who, believe it or not, never played the original Chrono Trigger. By releasing a newer version with a little bit of eye candy to appease those jaded of eye, it opens the experience up to hundreds of newer fans of the genre who otherwise would never have played the game. And should the quality speak for itself to such people, making the release a success, Square will have proven yet again that there's good money to be made by releasing RPGs in the West. And that could only be a good thing.

Sure, Square sucks, but I'll still buy their games with no qualms

Indeed, I believe that Square is trying to cash in on nostalgia with re-releasing ChronoTrigger, seeing as the only additions (that I know of-please correct me if I'm wrong) are the anime cut scenes, so essentially we're only paying for extra art...however, even though I think it's a little cheap to do so, you can be rest assured that I'll be one of the first in line to buy it (or import it if it ends up staying in the Land of the Rising Sun), just because I love ChronoTrigger so much...yup, it's pathetic people like me who give Square a reason to take an old game, throw in a bunch of new art, slap the game on a CD, and make $50 off it...

~Almighty Cheese & Bishounen Goddess Shosetsu

That certainly seems to be the popular opinion amongst the RPG community. Personally, I'd buy it, assuming that I actually had the money with which to purchase it. And, sadly, thanks to living the college life, that's a pretty large assumption. My life has become a living eCampus commercial. If it weren't for Maruchan, I would've starved to death by now. You know that you must be broke when you catch yourself envying the ease of life which drug dealers and pimps must surely enjoy.

Certain restrictions may apply

Drew,

I for one will buy the remake for Chrono Trigger if it ever comes to the US. Sure, I think it's a way for Square to cash in on the CT name but hell...I'm already suckered in through those movies. I do have my concerns however. First buying and playing the remake will be around the 50th time I will complete the game all the way through which will probably bore me to hell, but I'm willing for the cinemas. Heck I even forced myself to finish Tales of Destiny just to see the ending cinema (ooooh, it hurt though to see that the ending animation was only 5 seconds long and it wasn't all that exciting). Second is the long loading times that will most likely plague the game...but I guess the loading times can be bearable (since I've already played through Persona^^). Third is how the cinemas will affect the gameplay. On one of those movies you have at the GIA I saw that Crono, Lucca, Frog were fighting a Zombor and most likely the one you fight at Zenan Bridge. The thing that bothers me though is that Frog cannot be used during that fight (only Crono, Marle, and Lucca). If it's the Retinite (which looks like a Zombor) at Fiona's Villa then will the player be forced to use only Crono, Lucca, and Frog?

Well maybe I shouldn't prejudge the game before any specific details come out. I mean I was one of those dummies who griped about Chrono Cross not being Chrono Trigger-esque when the first screens came out (and I admit I was wrong, the game looks great!) But it's hard not to prejudge this game because it is a *remake* and therefore lacks its own merits.

Thanks for reading,

-Santy

That is a valid concern that you've pointed out, Santy. However, I'd like to think that Square is more than capable of working around the obvious problems inherent in a customizeable party like that which Chrono Trigger allows. Especially the case after the incident with Chrono. After all, they did it quite effectively with Final Fantasy VIII, and FFVII to a lesser extent. Quite honestly, I doubt that they'd make it so that Chrono Trigger forces you to take certain party members along for the anime cutscene which is coming up to feature the correct characters.

Luinx: the OS of the future

I know this is off topic...but I just have to say my piece...I don't like that Sony is using a propierty cable-modem network for the Playstation 2. I can barely afford to pay the $20 it takes to get on-line and I don't have cable(I got a "Dish Network" and I may have to get rid of it soon.). Most people are like me...stuck with a plain old modem...and besides it won't work...Anybody remember the ill-fated "Sega Channel"?? Nobody I really know here really pays to have a cable modem. In my area it is upwards of $30-$60 dollars a month and I can't afford that and nither can most of us.

-Shadow_Hunter

(I'm a computer guy...maybe I can hack up somthig that can play games on-line...much later...or someone else will...after all it's just Luinx)

I'll have to wait to see what the specifics are before I can make my own judgement. As things stand, however, I'm not sure I like the whole idea myself. For one thing, the area in which I live doesn't have a single cable modem provider, so should the PS2 require a cable modem pre-installed in your home, people like me are out of luck. I'd like to think that sooner or later online gaming will become as integral a part of console gaming as it is for PC gaming, but I just don't think that the technology is ready for that as of yet. I could be wrong, however. It's going to be interesting to see how Sega handles things; having the actual hardware needed to connect built into ths system is a different situation from what we've seen in the past. If Sega can find a way to keep lag times down, they may just stand a chance of making this work.

Closing Comments

That last letter brings me to tomorrow's topic. What, in your opinion, would it take for online gaming to become as accepted a forum with console owners as it already is with the PC gaming crowd? That's it for me today; I'm off to catch a few of those elusive Z's. See you tomorrow.
