Paper thin Nintendo - June 17, 2000 -

Still no Vagrant Story or Legend of Mana in Canada. Let's shed a tear for our Canadian brothers
and sisters.
This will bring out the Nintendo fans... |
AK:
Paper Mario has almost the exact same story as the 1993 NES classic, "Kirby's
Adventure".
I'm sick and tired of Nintendo doing this! Hell, I'm tired of Nintendo in
general. They must have the worst third party support this side of the Sega
Master System. Nintendo can't rely on Pokemon forever, because it's dying
out. The Nintendo 64 was a so-so design (Crummy sound chip, cartridges,
requires external support to get the most out of that thing), and the Game
Boy Color has some of the worst and deriviative games ever made.
So why is the Big N still alive? Rabin fan support. Fans that will buy
whatever crap Nintendo dishes out, even if they change their whole philosophy
on games in 3 years (From RPGs and killer platformers to strictly hybrid
games). It makes me sick how fans don't give a damn if the gameplay has
rotted into tedium, and how certain genres have become almost nonexistant.
I hope Paper Mario can change my mind. I used to love Nintendo in the Super
NES days. If Brownie Brown can produce a game on the same level as say,
Chrono Cross, I will forgive Nintendo for abandoning many fans.

I'm not a big fan of Nintendo in their current state, either. They've had some solid games on the
Nintendo 64, but for the most part the games have been a joke. Paper Mario has me about as excited as
the thought of getting head cold.
I think that, for the most part, the Nintendo 64 is done. They're going to milk some more out of it,
but companies are likely looking to the Dolphin. As a DVD system, 3rd party developers may find more
to like about it. Nintendo is notorious for limiting developer freedom, however, and that may cause
some to shy away.
I had a subscription to Nintendo Power for years, and I was a huge fan of it for years. I'd scoff at
the concept of a poor sap buying a Sega Master System or a Sega Genesis. Today, however, I think a lot
of Nintendo fans are even becoming frustrated with their favorite company.
I think the Playstation 2 will face serious competition in the Dolphin. The PS2 has a big jump, time-wise,
on the Dolphin, but hopefully Nintendo realizes it can't survive on Pokemon forever.
Can it?
My wallet feels your pain |
AK
Damn Square! Damn them all!! Why must they make so many great games?!
To afford all of them I have to forgo things that are the norm for many
Agents: fast cars, beautiful women...you know, all the things you got.
Thanks to them I have to get my martini stirred, not shaken, 'cause it's
cheaper! SQUAAARRREEEE!!!!!
-Agent X "why do I have to have a gamer side? *shouting* whyyyyyy?!!
|
Ah, yes. I understand your plight. I am in the same boat. Unfortunately,
not only do games sap my money, but I also pour money into guitars, and I'm
having to start paying rent and utility bills. My wallet is not happy.
It's getting so tight, I'm having to take my beautiful women to the McDonald's drive
through in my fast car. I bet my Nissan Pathfinder could hit 100 if I really asked it
nicely (and was going downhill with the wind at my back).
I pity Canadians |
Hey AK,
For the love of all that is holy and pure, Vagrant Story better be released in Canada SOON! Do you know what I did last night? I played PaRappa the freakin Rapper. Now, granted, it`s a funky game, but I want my VS, and I want it now!
Help me AK. You`re my only hope.

Online retailers can ship to Canada, can they not? Have you given www.ebword.com a visit? I bet they
could even overnight ship your order, so your poor deprived soul could get the game as fast as possible.
I wish you luck.
Size matters |
here's a heavy topic; if you could play RPGs such as Final Fantasy VIII, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, etc. on a system as big as, say, a Game Boy or Neo Geo Pocket, would you prefer it over sitting at a TV screen and messing with a Playstation or SNES? i'm not talking PSOne, here; i mean, a really small system. would you feel right playing great games like that on such a seemingly-simple and small platform? all factors (graphics, sound, etc.) in one, tinyyyyy portable system... would you rather use that or spend your Saturdays sitting on a computer chair and looking at a huge screen? personally, i'd play the games on the bigger systems first and use the portable for replay value, but that's just me.

Dude, I'd totally choose to play them on a full sized system on a nice big TV with sound
being pumped through my stereo. Handheld systems are great, but I'd often end up playing
my handheld systems crouched in a chair, uncomfortably holding the game system up to my
face so I could see what was going on. Give me a full sized anyday. Handhelds are great
for airplanes and long car drives (assuming, of course, you're not driving, and that you
have your seatbelt on; seatbelts save lives!), but not much else, if you ask me.
One Winged Angel |
Hey this shouldn't take long so if you could just
respond even if it isn't posted in the collumn that
would be great. My friend is trying to tell me that
the song One Winged Angel is Kefka's music from FFVI
when I am almost positive it is from FFVII. Which of
us is right? Thanks...
-TBoneSteak
|
Hey there TBone. I hope you put money on it being from FFVII, as it is. I expect a cut of the
winnings. 40% sounds fair.
Monkeys, monkeys, monkeys! |
AK,
It's been said that a million monkeys at a million type writers could put out
a great american novel. So I figured that one monkey on one keyboard could
make a great DA letter. So behold the greatest DA letter of all time!

Hey, I'm impressed. I bet that monkey could even write a full column. That'll save me a lot of time
tomorrow night... can I borrow him?
You can't rush art |

It's 12:45, where the hell is the new column
Oh, yeah, I'm getting CC, TRIBES 2, and FF9 as soon as they come out
Donald- still quite not as evil as Justin...yet
|
12:45 is early, my friend! I hadn't even read my mail until about 4:00. I keep wacky hours. But it
is a Saturday night, cut me some slack! I like to have fun, too. Not that this column isn't fun,
because it sure is. I love doing it. But I love other stuff too. Sorry about not getting the column
up for you, bud!
30 minutes later |
wtf
NOW, it's 1:10
Why isn't the column up yet
Donald, the annoyed
|
1:10... I was still out and about. Still sorry about the letdown, but when you wake up in the morning
there will be a bright shiny column for you! Assuming you don't wake up before 5:00 central...
Closing Comments:
Mmm. I hope I didn't make enemies with too many Nintendo fans. I really love Nintendo fans.
Hope to hear from some of you guys tomorrow. Peace!
