Interesting facts about Laguna and his role in the game, plus some Laguna-related things you may have missed. This page contains massive spoilers, including the big spoiler about Laguna that is often debated by people who have beaten the game, so if you haven't beaten the game, read at your own risk.

The Shumi Tribe side quest

Most people will go to the Shumi Village at least once, and see that they're building a statue of Laguna. The first bit of the sidequest involves finding some stones to help them with the construction. But what you may not know is that if you go back again, there's another part of the quest left to be done!

The second part is much like the first part with the stones - basically a fetch quest. But here you will learn a little more about the Shumi and their way of life, and also discover that the one in the village who admires Laguna the most is the Elder's Attendant, who actually would like to leave the village and fight at Laguna's side. The goal is to get three of the Shumis working on the statue so that it will be done faster.

And then, if you go back a third time, you'll get to see the fruits of all your hard work - the statue is finished! And boy does it look cool. Not only that, but you get to see a flashback to Laguna's time in the village, which (as with all Laguna scenes) is both hilarious and sweet.

Visiting Laguna's movie set

Here's something to do if you're as obsessed with Laguna as I am, and kind of bored: Visit the set of his movie! In southeastern Trabia, you will find the Vienne Mountains. Among these mountains is what looks like a winding path leading through a narrow canyon. Walk towards it, and you'll find yourself in Trabia Canyon, which is just as you'll remember it from the flashback scene. There's absolutely no point to this as far as I know (and if there is a point to this, and you know it, please write and tell me, okay? ;)), in fact there aren't even any Ruby Dragons to fight. But hey - it's easy to miss and it has to do with Laguna, so I'll mention it here anyway.

Lyrics to Eyes On Me, Julia's song for Laguna

Whenever sang my songs
On the stage, on my own
Whenever said my words
Wishing they would be heard
I saw you smiling at me
Was it real, or just my fantasy
You'd always be here in the corner
Of this tiny little bar?

My last night here for you
Same old songs, just once more
My last night here with you?
Maybe yes, maybe no
I kind of liked it, your way
How you shyly placed your eyes on me
And did you ever know
That I had mine on you?

Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if you're never hurt
As if you're never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly, but sure?
If frown is shown, then I will know
That you are no dreamer

So let me come to you
Close as I want to be
Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay there as I whisper
How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
And did you ever know
That I had mine on you?

Darling, so share with me
Your love if you have enough
Your tears if you're holding back
Or pain if that's what it is
How do I let you know
I'm more than the dress and the voice?
Just reach me out, then you will know
You are not dreaming

Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if you're never hurt
As if you're never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly, but sure?
If frown is shown, then I will know
That you are no dreamer

Whatever became of Julia?

At the start of disc two, we hear a little bit about what happened to Julia, but very little. We learn that she waited for her "true love" to return from the war, but he didn't. Galbadia's General Caraway comforted her, and the two of them eventually married. Somewhere along the line, she wrote "Eyes On Me," the song she told Laguna she wanted to write about him, and fulfilled her dream of being a singer.

From there, it's fairly obvious that Julia is Rinoa's mother, but it explains in more detail in the Information section of the game's tutorial. Julia's last name was in fact Heartilly, and she gave birth to a baby girl not long after she married General Caraway. Five years after the girl was born, she died in an automobile accident.

It may seem odd that the single scene with herself and Laguna is even included in the game, which shows Laguna going on to marry someone else, and primarily focuses on the romance between Squall and Rinoa. And why is Eyes On Me the main theme of the game, despite the fact it's not even about Squall and Rinoa, nor does it relate to them? Some have theorized that the relationship between Squall (Laguna's son) and Rinoa (Julia's daughter) is putting to rest the love that never could be between their parents. This would certainly give Julia's incredibly short appearance in the game more meaning.

Proof of Squall's parentage

If you've read any spoilers for near the end of the game, you know that one big controversy seems to keep going... namely, is or isn't Laguna Squall's father? Yes, he is - and for those who want proof, I submit the following evidence...

Raine died after giving birth to a baby boy, according to Ellone. As is seen in the ending, Laguna married Raine. If the child was not Laguna's, then who was it?

Raine's child was born seventeen years ago. During the course of the game, it's repeatedly stated that the Sorceress War ended seventeen years ago, and late in the game we found out how - right after Laguna sends Ellone back from Esthar, he helps the resistance movement defeat Adel. Raine dies before he gets back, so it would have to be within that window of time between the time he sent Ellone back, and the time he defeats Adel, that Raine's baby is born. Seventeen years ago, so the baby would now be Squall's age.

Ellone was sent to the orphanage run by Cid and Edea Kramer after Raine's death. Why would they send her one place, and the baby to another? Therefore, it's highly likely that Raine and Laguna's baby was one of the children also at the orphanage.

As a small child, Squall tries to keep Ellone all to himself. He and the others may have been too young initially to know that there was a connection between the two, but Ellone certainly wouldn't have been. And they got the nickname "Sis" for her from somewhere...

If you play cards with Laguna on the Ragnarok, you'll see he has Squall's character card. Throughout the course of the game, you'll usually find character cards on people who are closely connected to them, certainly not a person the character has never met before. (With the exception of the Queen of Cards side quest...) Zell's mother has his card, Rinoa's father has her card, the Trepies have Quistis's card, Ellone has Laguna's card...

The most obvious clue is also on the Ragnarok, during the same time frame during which you can challenge Laguna to a game of Triple Triad. Ward and Kiros all but state it outright. If you talk to Kiros, he tells Squall "You look very much like your mother." Which would have to mean he's seen Squall's mother, which would be a completely useless bit of information unless we also had seen his mother during the course of the game. Then if you speak to Ward, he tells Squall (with the help of Kiros) "Good thing you don't look like your father." For the same reasons as above, this means we also have seen Squall's father. And who do we know who Ward would pick on in such a way, hmm?

And finally, if all that isn't enough - DNA evidence. In the Information section of the tutorial, the entry for moombas states that they remember people's blood. When Laguna came to the Shumi Village seventeen years before, he lived among them for awhile, and even tried to teach a moomba to talk. All it was able to say, however, was his name. And then at the beginning of disc 2, while escaping the desert prison, a moomba licks Squall, and proclaims "Laguna!" How else would Laguna's blood be Squall's...?
