First Zelda Gaiden screens
[08.04.99] » Nintendo releases the first screen shots from the next Nintendo 64 Zelda title and confirms a US release.
While the industry has known about the existence of another Zelda based upon Zelda 64's 3D engine for months, Nintendo only began openly discussing the title in recent weeks. Now, the company has released three tantalizing screen shots from the game known simply as "Zelda Gaiden." The in-progress screens aren't final, but offer a fantastic look at what one can expect in the final game:
All three of the screen shots are taken from unfamiliar territory, seemingly indicating that while the gameplay engine itself may remain identical to Zelda 64, players will be able to explore completely new environments. The first screen depicts Young Link riding the baby Epona -- something only Adult Link could do in Zelda 64. Nintendo notes that the bow seen in the picture will likely be removed in the final version of the game, to be used only by the older Link.
Zelda Gaiden's second released screen shows Young Link standing below what appears to be a large clock. An odd berry not seen in Zelda 64 is also visible in Link's inventory. Finally, the third screen has Link fighting a humanoid Gohma of some kind. Throughout all of the screens, as well, is what appears to be an ornate circular indicator of some sort -- a sundial, Nintendo helpfully speculates.
Additionally (and not surprisingly), Nintendo has confirmed that Zelda Gaiden will find a release in the US on the Nintendo 64, although a release date has yet to be determined. We're looking forward to Nintendo's Japanese Space World expo at the end of August when the company is certain to fully unveil the next installment in the blockbuster series.
