E3: Castlevania: Resurrection game details and screenshots

[05.18.99] » A few details and screens emerge for the latest in the Castlevania lineage

Never ones to shy away from developing for a new platform, Konami recently announced the development of Castlevania: Resurrection for Sega's Dreamcast. Although still at an extremely early stage in the development cycle, and as such shown only in video clips at Konami's booth, a few game details have emerged.

Players assume the role of Sonia Belmont, the first known Belmont in the family lineage, who has been brought back from the grave. Dracula has teamed up with a sorceress known at this point only as "The Countess", and as always it's up to a Belmont to put a stop to his diabolical plans. Sonia's first apperance was in Casltevania Legends for the Gameboy, which took place in 1492, but the timeframe of Resurrection is still unknown. The fact that she needed to be reanimated suggests that the Belmont lineage had died off after hundreds of years, but that remains mere speculation.

Unfortunately, little is known about Resurrection's actual genre classification at this point. Konami has claimed that it will incorporate more action elements, but it should also be mentioned that Konami also classified Metal Gear Solid as an action game, although we at the GIA feel it incorporates every element of an Adventure game. Besides, the Castlevania series is just plain cool. So for now, we'll give Resurrection the benefit of the doubt and cover it extesively. If further details reveal that it doesn't fall into the adventure genre, we'll quietly step out.
