E3: Too Human publisher, impressions

[05.16.99] » MGM Interactive is officially on board as publisher for Silicon Knights' Too Human. Read the news and our full impressions of the playable game from the show floor.

When the first details regarding Too Human were released by developer Silicon Knights, the GIA dug a little deeper and discovered that MGM Interactive was the likely publisher for the intriguing adventure RPG. Both a little-known report and the registration of the domain "toohuman.com" pointed at MGM as publisher, and assistant producer Rue Hon from the company was more than happy to finally confirm the conjecture on the floor at E3. According to Hon, MGM is pushing for a first-quarter 2000 retail release of Too Human.

A fully playable version of the game was also available for eager show-goers to try out. The game begins with a compilation of CG scenes and epic, choral music not unlike Final Fantasy VIII's opener. A world consumed by technological advancements is seen in precise, extremely impressive detail, and the game's main character, John Franks, is introduced. Players then take control of Franks as he finds himself within the training compound of Aesir Corporation's vast facility. Game control and the camera's perspective are handled quite similar to Tomb Raider, with the camera trailing directly behind the player. Multiple weapons were available for selection and use within the 3D engine, and with Franks' optical implant, one can target specific parts of an enemy's anatomy. The same is true in reverse -- an on-screen indicator details damage dealt to both foes and Franks. Should Franks lose the use of his left leg, for example, he will stumble and limp until he can make his way to a health station. A few camera and control issues were noticable in the demo, but Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack is confident the engine will be tweaked and perfected in time for release.

Overall, Too Human easily emerged as one of the most promising titles of the show; the GIA is eagerly looking forward to a more polished version. We'll have screen shots of Too Human's actual gameplay engine shortly.
