ASCII introduces new RPG
[02.12.99] » Titled "The Long Eden," you star as an impudent little kid determined to unravel the mysteries of his past.
ASCII of Japan has announced a new RPG in development titled "The Long Eden." The game stars you, Lody, an impudent young boy determined to solve the mysteries behind his own origin by discovering lost "Eden Keys" scattered about airborn islands. Dungeons found on the islands are known as "Cube Dungeons," seeing as how they're at least partially constructed by cubes.
Inside these dungeons, players occasionally come across what's been termed "Echo Blocks." (Pictures below) These transparent cubes impede access to valuable treasures and pathways, and can only be destroyed by utilizing the elemental power opposite to the block. For example, if the block is ice-based, usage of fire will clear the path for further exploration. Another unique aspect of gameplay is the "Invention Room." Within the confines of this laboratory, items and weapons can be disassembled and reassembled into all sorts of combinations. If the combination process goes awry, however, a fiery explosion will greet your attempts.
The Long Eden uses an isometric viewpoint throughout, similar to the visual engine seen in the Landstalker series. There's also a second character seen below -- a young girl named Dazy. ASCII's newest RPG is set for an April 22 release in Japan, though there's no word as of yet on a North American translation. Thanks to The Magic Box for much of the translated info.
