 |     Early January brought news that Square had paid super-duper-mega-popular Asian pop vocalist Faye Wong one million dollars to perform a song titled "Eyes On Me" for Final Fantasy VIII. The orchestral song, set to be played during the opening CG sequences in the game, has also been recorded as a pop music version which will soon be broadcasting across Asian radio airwaves.    The actual language of the song, however, was unknown until now. While Wong typically sings in Mandarin or Cantonese, a recently published Japanese Final Fantasy VIII art book (more on this tomorrow) contains lyrics for the song written in English. Square's recent Xenogears also contained English lyrics in all versions of the game.    And now, without further ado... Eyes On Me Whenever sang my songsOn the stage, on my own
 Whenever sad my words
 Wishing they would be heard
I saw you smiling at me
Was it real or just my fantasy
You'd always be there in the corner
 Of this tiny little bar
My last night here for youSame old songs, just once more
My last night here with you?
 Maybe yes, maybe no
I kind of liked it your your way
How you shyly placed your eyes on me
 Oh, did you ever know?
That I had mine on you
*Darling, so there you areWith that look on your face
 As if you're never hurt
 As if you're never down
Shall I be the one for you
Who pinches you softly but sure
 If frown is shown then
I will know that you are no dreamer
So let me come to youClose as I wanted to be
 Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay there as I whisper
How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
 Did you ever know
That I had mine on you
Darling, so share with meYour love if you have enough
Your tears if you're holding back
Or pain if that's what it is
How can I let you know
I'm more than the dress and the voice
 Just reach me out then
You will know that you're not dreaming
 * repeat    It's obviously difficult to get a decent feeling of the song without the accompanying music, but the lyrics certainly seem to evoke a tender poignancy that'll surely add to the game's main theme of love.    Thanks again to Rob at toriyama.org for the info.
