Square promises titles for next PlayStation

[12.25.98] » Square of Japan's president pledges support for Sony's next console, ruling out the possibility of development for the Sega Dreamcast.

According to Japanese news site Magic Box, Square of Japan president Tomoyuki Takechi recently announced that several titles are already in development for Sony's next console system. Takechi stated that the new machine (dubbed the PlayStation 2 by industry media) falls into the 128-bit processing category, and should be available to the Japanese market in winter, 1999.

No titles have been announced as of yet, but Takechi declared that the sales of Brave Fencer Musashiden in the past year have been satisfactory enough for Square to create a series based on the game. A previous story from earlier this month also suggests that Square is working on a Final Fantasy title for the next PlayStation.

When queried regarding the possibility of Dreamcast development, Takechi replied that Square has no intention of development for Sega's new platform, despite the system's impressive networking features.
