Star Ocean goes portable

[12.20.99] » The first game in the Star Ocean series is bound for the Game Boy Color.

Enix recently announced that a Game Boy Color port of its Super Famicom RPG Star Ocean is in the works for release in Japan sometime next year. There's no word on whether tri-Ace -- Star Ocean's original developer -- or another developer will handle the port, nor how closely the Game Boy version will mirror its 16-bit cousin. (Some features, such as the copious voice acting, will obviously not survive the transition.)

Given the popularity of Star Ocean 2, it's certainly possible that Enix America will select the new port as one of the seven games it plans to localize in 2000. If so, the GBC release will mark the first time the game has appeared in English, as the original Super Famicom version arrived after Enix had already closed down its North Americna offices.
