Japanese games on a US Dreamcast?

[09.30.99] » Strange procedure allows US DC games to work on a Japanese system. Will it work the other way around?

For those wishing to import Dreamcast games without using a mod chip or dangerous swapping methods, a new option has been uncovered to use US DC discs on a Japanese system, and it just might work the other way around. Here's how to do it:

  • Insert the demo disc from the November '99 issue of the Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine. It will load as if it was a Japanese game.
  • Return to the Dreamcast's main menu.
  • Select Play. Look for the blue Sega screen to come up, and as soon as it fades to white, open the Dreamcast. The disc should stop spinning and the white screen should remain. At this point a Japanese game would have kicked the system back to the main menu.
  • Replace the demo disc with a US game, and it will load properly.
This method has only been confirmed to work with NFL2K, although it should work with any game. No one has attempted using the same method to play Japanese games on a US Dreamcast, but there is a fair chance it should work. At worst, those who want to use one system to play both American and import games can buy an imported Dreamcast and use the instructions above.
