Square Pictures ready to be sold

[12.13.01] » All because of a measly $100 million loss.

Square Pictures, Squaresoft's Hawaii-based film-making subsidiary, is currently up for sale as a result of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within's less than stellar theatrical performance. Unfortunately, most of the $135 million that Square invested in the film went towards the building of Square Pictures, enabling easy access to a full CG studio and experienced staff for Square's next movie, which is not to be.

However, Square doesn't seem to be moving out just yet. Despite the studio being for sale, a second project is already underway with an unknown collaborator. Square has also stated that it would like to remain a minority partner with whoever ends up purchasing the studio, working on such projects as contract CG animation.
