PlayStation 2 Linux Kit coming to North America

   At the Rambus Developer Forum 2001, Sony Computer Entertainment CTO Shinichi Okamoto confirmed Sony's intent to release the PlayStation 2 Linux Development Kit in North America. A U.S. release date and pricing have yet to be announced, but the kit currently sells in Japan for about 25,000 yen (slightly over $200 US). The kit includes a software DVD, a 40GB hard drive, a USB keyboard, and a mouse. The kit allows users to install X-Windows graphical interface to run a number of simple applications, as well as develop minimalistic games and applications for the PS2. No further details were announced.
