Resident Evil series becomes GameCube exclusive

[09.13.01] » All previous Resident Evils to be remade; Resident Evil 4 now planned for GameCube.

At a press conference today in Japan, Capcom and Nintendo together announced that the former's famed Resident Evil series will now be exclusive to the GameCube. Resident Evil 4, previously due out on the PlayStation 2, is now to be released only on the GameCube. Resident Evil 0, the previously-announced GameCube prequel to the series, also remains on track for GameCube release.

Those two new games are just the tip of the iceberg, however, as Capcom also plans to remake Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, and Resident Evil CODE: Veronica for the GameCube. Screenshots and additional details on the Resident Evil 1 remake have already been released.

The Resident Evil 1 remake is due out first - on March 22nd in Japan -- with Resident Evil Zero to follow after that. Resident Evil 4 is expected only after RE 2, RE 3, and CODE: Veronica have been rereleased.

While Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto praised the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom explained the surprising move: Rather than spread the series out across several platforms and force followers to buy several systems, Capcom wanted to make one system the console of choice for Resident Evil fans.
