Resident Evil 1 officially headed to GameCube

[09.13.01] » Capcom's first survival horror title to be remade in full rendered splendor.

Capcom today confirmed long-standing rumors that the original Resident Evil title will be remade for the GameCube. Though it was originally rumored to be in full 3-D, the remake appears to keep the same style of polygonal characters on pre-rendered backgrounds. The graphics, however, have been greatly improved, as a comparison of the original and new versions highlights. Gameplay and story enhancements will be added to the remake as well.

Footage of the new Resident Evil in action has been posted on Capcom Japan's web site. (See the bottom of the linked page.) The two-minute, forty-three-second clip can be downloaded in 640 x 480, 320 x 240, and 160 x 120 MPEGs.

The REmake is due out March 22nd, 2002, in Japan, where it is known as Biohazard. A North American release has not been announced, but given the series' history will likely follow soon after the Japanese release.
