Dragon Quest headed to GameCube?

[06.21.01] » Unconfirmed reports say Enix's RPG series will find its next home on Nintendo's new console.

As first noted by Tendo Box, the website of gaming TV show Electric Playground has reported that Enix has a new Dragon Quest title in the works for the Nintendo GameCube. The report does not specify the GameCube title as Dragon Quest VIII, though if Enix is developing a DQ title for the GameCube, it would most likely be DQ VIII. Enix is also preparing a "special title" for release on the Game Boy Advance, according to the site.

Enix's official line on the next Dragon Quest remains that Dragon Quest VIII is in development for an "undetermined" platform and that the company will release the game for whatever console has the largest userbase - likely the PlayStation 2. However, other reports have pegged the company as dissatisfied with Sony's console, so it's possible Dragon Quest VIII could end up on the GameCube instead.

An official word on Enix's position towards the GameCube is not likely to come until Nintendo's SpaceWorld show in August, when Japanese developers reveal their support for the system - or lack thereof.
