Microsoft, NTT partner for online Xbox gaming

[03.29.01] » ADSL-based network to debut in Japan in 2002.

Microsoft and NTT Communications today announced plans to create an ADSL-based online game network for Japanese Xbox owners. Expected to begin sometime in 2002, the service will make use of the Xbox's built-in Ethernet port and hard drive. NTT Com will provide the ADSL access, while Microsoft's Xbox Division will build the gaming services and provide support to game developers.

"Every Xbox console has built-in broadband capability, the technology of the future for online video gaming. This alliance with NTT Com will enable gamers to enjoy the best online game content and gaming experience available," said Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft.

"With broadband entering a new phase, as evidenced by the rapid proliferation of ADSL, we consider 2001 to be the inaugural year for broadband services," said Masanobu Suzuki, president and CEO of NTT Com.

The Xbox's official Japanese unveiling will occur tomorrow at the Tokyo Game Show.
