Xbox's Dreamcast compatibility denied
[01.27.01] » Microsoft unsurprisingly puts the kibosh on rumors of a DC
compatible Xbox.
In response to rumors that the Xbox would include
a built in Dreamcast chip for full compatibility with the DC library,
Microsoft has issued a flat denial. The company firmly stated the
console would only contain the announced processor, sound, and graphics
chips, and that no further additions were to be made.
However, as Gamers.com,
who first reported the possible DC-compatabilty, noted in their original
story, Bill Gates himself has gone on record saying the Xbox hardware
is not yet complete and will have several new, unrevealed chips to
be added later. Microsoft also issued a denial on leaked pictures of the Xbox when the pictures were indeed legitimite and came directly from the exclusive layout the company had given to EGM. They were published days later.
Whether this denial is the end of the story or the
usual corporate damage-control won't likely be known until this Spring's
Tokyo Game Show. Microsoft will be unveiling their Xbox strategy for
Japan and are rumored to be making a huge announcement concerning
Japanese support for the new console.
