Phantasy Star II, Shining Force to be included in Dreamcast classics package
[11.10.00] » Sega reaches back into its past for an innovative new "Smash Pack" offer to current Dreamcast owners.
Sega announced today that they would be releasing a special Dreamcast system-plus-games bundle, similar to their popular Sports Set. But instead of including classic Dreamcast games, the Sega "Smash Pack" will focus on favorites for older Sega systems. The star of the pack is the Genesis disc, which will include 10 favorites from Sega's 16-bit system, including the highly sought-after RPGs Shining Force & Phantasy Star II and the puzzle favorite Columns. These games will be presented just as they were on the Genesis, with no updating of any kind. The disc is rounded out with Sonic the Hedgehog, Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage 2, Vectorman, Altered Beast, and Wrestle War. Also included in the Smash Pack will be the free Dreamcast puzzle game Sega Swirl and the Dreamcast translation of Virtua Cop 2.
This kind of offer is an unprecedented step for a console company and one that will be undoubtedly welcomed by fans of Sega's past favroites. The size and scope of the collection is unmatched by current compilations that largely focus on arcade titles or games from a single series. While Sega has not announced plans for either the Genesis disc or Virtua Cop 2 to be released separately, the Smash Pack will be available in January at retailers across North America for the very affordable price of $179.99.
