Sega cans Phantasy Star Online limited edition

[10.28.00] » Sonic Adventure 2 demo, special VMU to see release through other means.

Sonic Team today confirmed rumors that the limited edition of Phantasy Star Online has been dropped. Originally scheduled to be released in Japan alongside Phantasy Star Online on December 21st, the package would have included a demo of Sonic Adventure 2 and a special Phantasy Star Online VMU with four times the memory capacity of a regular VMU. Due to poor sales of Sega's other limited edition releases, such as Skies of Arcadia, the title has been canceled.

The items scheduled to be included with the limited edition will still be available, however. The Sonic Adventure 2 demo will simply be included with all first-printing copies of Phantasy Star Online, while the PSO VMU will be sold through Sega's Dreamcast Direct service for 4800 yen (about $44 US). Dreamcast Direct will also sell the VMU bundled with the game for 9800 yen ($90), the price of the original Phantasy Star Online limited edition.

Sega of America has yet to announce any plans to release either special item in North America.
