Konami reveals Silent Hill GBA details

[08.22.00] » And it's not survival horror.

Konami of Japan revealed the first details about their forthcoming Silent Hill game for the Game Boy Advance. Popular opinion believed that the game would be a survival horror title like its PlayStation brother. Popular opinion was wrong, however, as the game has been revealed to be a "visual novel."

The "visual novel" genre has not had much success outside of Japan. Games of this type usually play like Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books augmented with unmoving background graphics, mood-setting music, and the occasional sound effect. (One visual novel U.S. gamers may be familiar with is Square's Radical Dreamers, the inspiration for Chrono Cross.) While some fans may have been hoping for a portable survival horror title, Konami may not have wanted to repeat the mistakes of Capcom's Resident Evil GBC. Hopefully, the stripped-down gameplay will make for a compelling and still terrifying experience.
