Dreamworks SKG, Atlus team up for Rhapsody movie

[04.01.00] » Film hoped to revive both movie musicals and videogame movies.

On the heels of Madonna's interest in the Parasite Eve story and film rights comes an unexpected, but not unwelcome, movie deal--this time involving Atlus' upcoming strategy RPG Rhapsody.

"When I heard that song 'Someday,'" explained Britney Spears, avid roleplaying fan and driving force behind the project, "I knew I had to play Cornet on the big screen. I've been looking for a film that would offer a good role for me, and what better way to ensure that than starting up my own project?"

"We at Dreamworks are excited to get behind a project that appeals to so many interest groups," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Dreamworks executive. "Britney's fans will love it, it's got a built-in audience who knows the game, and of course everyone who loves big-time movie musicals will appreciate the return of this dying form."

The movie will be titled after the original Japanese game, "The Adventure of Puppet Princess" at Spears' insistence, though she declined to comment on her reasons. Henson Studios will be in charge of the puppetry, while rumors persist that Shirley Manson has already signed to portray Cornet's nemesis Marjoly. No director or screenwriter has been confirmed so far.
