Nintendo announces Pokémon Purple: Special Mr. Mime Edition

[04.01.00] » Mr. Mime to star in new remake of Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Nintendo today announced Pokémon Purple: Special Mr. Mime Edition, a new remake of the Game Boy Color-based Pokémon Gold and Silver. Similar to Pokémon Yellow and its focus on Pikachu, Pokémon Purple grants Mr. Mime to players at the start of the game in place of the usual 3 starting Pokémon. Mr. Mime follows along behind the hero throughout the game and communicates with the occasional audio clip of his famous cry, "Mr. Mime!"

Mr. Mime will also be able to learn more moves than he did in previous Pokémon titles. And once the upcoming Pokémon Stadium 3 is released, players will also be able to unlock a special hidden "Surfing Mr. Mime" mini-game.

Mr. Mime's astounding rise to stardom

"Over the past few months, Mr. Mime has proven to be one of the most popular Pokémon amongst fans of all ages," said Peter Main, Nintendo executive vice president of sales and marketing. "Pokémon Purple: Special Mr. Mime Edition is the long-overdue recognition of Mr. Mime's contribution the Pokémon universe."

"I'm baffled," said Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri of Game Freak when asked about Mr. Mime's popularity. "Even I don't know why I put Mr. Mime in the game. He's a mime. There are 250 other Pokémon out there -- what the hell is wrong with you people?"
