Konami announces Air Guitar Freaks for PlayStation 2

[04.01.00] » Special controller one of the most innovative yet.

Just when you thought Konami's Bemani line had covered every instrument possible, they've announced the most innovative music game ever. In the new Air Guitar Freaks, there are no more Append discs--only you, the game, and your imagination.

The game features an onscreen display of your score and some corresponding animation, much like other Bemani games, but that's where the similarities end. Unlike its predecessors, the player is not limited to the few preselected tracks on the Air Guitar Freaks disc. Rather, in a nod to Nana-On-Sha's recent Vib Ribbon, the game data fits into the PS2's increased RAM, allowing you to switch in any music CD you want. The game then processes each track on the fly into comparison data to match against your performance on the controller.

Said controller, like other Bemani games, is specially made for Air Guitar Freaks. Through advanced infrared technology, the end of the cord (held in the right hand) tracks the relative motion of both hands. There are two modes of difficulty: Studio Mode, in which you need only play accurately, and Live Mode, where the overall gyration of the hips and banging of the head are also a factor. To get a high score and achieve the higher rankings, you'll not only have to strum your air controller to the right tempo, you'll have to get your whole body involved and thrash like a real rock star. "We wanted to get the feel of air guitar right in this game, so we consulted with the world champion air guitarists from Finland. Their input was quite valuable in the making of this Air Guitar Freaks game," explains Yuro Mama, the project leader.

In addition to straight Air Guitar Challenge mode, there are also several songs available in "Legend Mode", allowing you to mimic the style of unique axemen from rock and roll history. Think you can slash like Slash, or do Pete Townshend-style splits? "Welcome to the Jungle" and "My Generation" give you the chance to find out. Other modes include "Champion Battler," which allows you to strut your stuff on the same songs that past winners of the Air Guitar World Championship have used, as well as "Freestyle Mode," where a MIDI rendition of your movements will be generated on the fly. Just as in regular air guitarring, the fun never stops with Air Guitar Freaks. Now all that's needed is a confirmation of U.S. release.
