Additional Star Ocean: Blue Sphere details

[03.24.00] » First plot information, plus a look at some new gameplay systems.

The meaning of the "Blue Sphere" subtitle in has finally become clear, as developer tri-Ace recently revealed that the Blue Sphere is a planet-like object to which the party will eventually travel. However, the game begins on Earth, Claude's home planet; the Blue Sphere doesn't appear later on. (Earth's appearance in Blue Sphere is the first time in the Star Ocean series that Earth has been included as part of the actual game.)

The first details concerning the previously-announced multiplayer mode have also been divulged. The mode will feature a fast-action slant, as both players have to race about the battlefield, fighting for the same equipment and item creation components.

Lufia-style puzzle elements will also be added to mix in the normal, one-player game. The lead character of the party -- the one that appears on the field map -- can be changed at will, and each character can use his or her own special talents to help the party past various obstacles and puzzles. Ernest, for example, wields his whip, while Precis has been spotted riding around in a modified version of Bobot. It seems you'll also be able to spot monsters wandering around and avoid them (and, consequently, battles) entirely.

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is due out this summer in Japan. Look for full impressions of the game from the Tokyo Game Show soon.
