Let's Positive Thinking! - September 3rd, 1999 - Fritz Fraundorf
Disclaimer: The opinions expressed within this column are those of the participants and the moderator, and do not neccessarily reflect those of the GIA. There is coarse language and potentially offensive material afoot. Contents in the overhead bins may have shifted during flight. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Where in the world is Drew Cosner? On vacation, that's where. He'd hoped to get in the week's last column before he left, but he didn't get the chance, so instead you're stuck with me: Fritz Fraundorf, aka "that guy who hates Xenogears." I'll be handling letters next week as well, but I'm giving you all a sneak preview today of what kind of ramblings you can expect to see beginning the 6th. Just remember, no reviews or screenshots of this column are allowed until Monday, or you'll be fined $500 and lose your job.
And since nobody ever asked me what kind of original RPG settings I'd like to see, here's one for you anyway: a game where you play as some random guy. He isn't a spikey-haired adventurous, idealistic youth with a sword, nor is he a schizophrenic, emotionless, reluctant hero. He's just an average guy. And he doesn't save the world or overthrow an evil empire; he just does generic, everyday chores. He wakes up, does a bunch of stuff, and then goes back to sleep, and that's the end of the game.
Friends don't let friends visit "that site" |
</imagination> Drew, <imagination>
I suppose this topic isn't as Free as you'd like, because it's based on the
lone story that's been posted as of 1:35 AM EST, but whatever.
I'm sure everyone's found their own personal line from Sakaguchi-san to
dissect and give a totally unintended and incorrect meaning to, and a bunch
of people will probably pick this one, but whatever.
" GW: Square Soft seems very commited to staying with Sony in the future.
Have you started work on any PlayStation 2 projects?
HS: PlayStation 2? No. Wait; let me rephrase that - I don't know."
He doesn't know? How could he not know? What could this possibly mean? When
will I stop asking rhetorical questions and just get on with my damn theory?
Okay, we know that at a recent press conference, Hiroshi burst forth with an
unexpected outburst of unbridled enthusiasm (which for the Japanese amounts
to the raising of an eyebrow) and let go that he was "excited" about the
Dolphin. So here's my guess... currently, Squaresoft is developing games
that have no intended home. They are simply working on projects, and those
projects will go to whichever next-generation system (the PS2 or the Dolphin)
can handle them best.
I suppose it's only a matter of time, but I have a feeling we'll know for
sure where Squaresoft is headed by year's end. What an exciting time for
RPGam... uh... people that play RPGs.
I don't visit that site. Really.

That's an interesting theory, and one that could well prove true. The Dolphin is really still too far away for Square to be able to make a final call on it, and, since Square seems to be adamant in developing for only one system at a time, developing system-independent projects wouldn't be a bad idea.
My money's still on Square sticking with Sony (after all, Square's subsidiary Dream Factory is working on an PSX2 fighting game), but a Square-Nintendo alliance isn't out of the question. Of course, we all know that the best part of that interview was actually the revelation that Sakaguchi's daughter is a Pokémon fan. Will the madness ever end?
Open season |
Dearest Drew,
Not that *I* would be so crass as to fan a tired old flamefest now that the embers have died down, but I was just wondering if anyone noticed the irony (nay, some might even say hypocrisy!) in this header at Gamefan.com:
"If I ever get so jaded that a game
like this fails to impress me, please
put me out of my misery."
- El Nino on the competition's
scores for Sega's NFL2K
Is this an open sanction? Justifiable homicide? Legalized euthenasia? I've already got my fur cap and safety-orange vest on and ready to go.

What is, in your opinion, the best video game ever made, regardless to what
console or platform it was on?
|
Normally, I'd offer a universally-accepted recommendation like River City Ransom
or Wally Bear and the NO Gang, but then I realized that as Brian Glick never
owned a NES (and consequently never played either of these classics), they are not truly universally accepted.
No, only one game deserves to claim the mantle of the best game ever: the only game that flawlessly combined the best of the RPG and rhythm action genres. Yes, that's right, the
true Game of the Millennium is neither anime-themed RPG nor guitar rhythm game,
but somewhere in between.
Hey, you asked.
Don't believe the lies |
You didn't print my letter on Tuesday cause it spoke the facts (now that
the gia hides its FF9 section). It's funny how there was a column
devoted to how FF9 would appear on PSX in march cause Digicube said so.
Coem on, now backpeddle a little.
Anyways, the only thing we can see next is that at TGS FF9 will be
revealed look NOTHING like the supposed drawings from Square and that's
that. Would you like to buy that ocean front property in Utah? It's still for sale.

As I was struck dumb by the coherency of this well thought out argument,
Drew himself dropped off a response before jetting off to wherever he's
headed.
The letter you sent me earlier this week spoke of a hoax that FF Online
pulled, which has absolutely nothing to do with our FF IX story. The
pictures we posted came from within Square itself, and are clearly labeled
as being FF IX. We've stated from the outset that they could be preliminary
sketches and concepts that won't make their way into the final form of the
game; no secrets there. We're just reporting upon the facts.
Lastly, Digicube is a subsidiary that is fully owned by Square, not just
some random company whose words have no portent, as you seem to feel is the
case. If you don't believe the story, that's well enough, but there is
nothing false or infactual about it.
By the way, the Final Fantasy IX section isn't exactly being concealed.
Click the news button. Why, I do believe I see it clearly labeled right
there. News about Final Fantasy IX on the news page? We are such devious
bastards.

I couldn't have said it any better.
Heaven and AN ISLAND |
What Wulfgang suggested (on Thursday) might offend a bunch of folks,
but I thought of something
similar that would be pretty neat. There's a paper RPG by the name
of _In Nomine_ that would make a great setting for a CRPG. Basically,
you play as angels and/or demons in the modern-day world. You are
in the service of an Archangel or Demon Prince, who has responsibility
over one specific facet of reality (a "Word"), and thus determines
the sort of thing you'll get sent to do. The various celestal beings
are so much "good" and "evil" as they are "selfless" and "selfish".
The possibilities for a CRPG are obvious; you could play as an angel,
a normal human shmuck, a demon who, much like Cecil in FF4, redeems
himself, or even just a plain old non-reformed demon.
Or, in this age of multiple-storyline RPGs, all of them at various
times.
The setting doesn't lend itself to the "travel through map, random
fight" formula of most CRPGs today, but surely an RPG where you didn't
spend *all* of your time in pointless random battles wouldn't hurt.
|
Actually, that sounds quite a bit like the Megami Tensei (aka
Revelations) series. While you don't actually play as a demon
or angel (you're those aforementioned "normal human shmucks"), you can
side with either good or evil and battle various demons and angels en
route to obliterating whichever side you're fighting.
Unfortunately, the only games in the series to ever make it to North
America are Persona and The Demon Slayer (Last Bible in Japan), both of which
are part of spin-off series and neither of which feature multiple paths (at
least not in the U.S. versions) or apocalyptic struggles. But that's what
imports are for, right?
I'll be the set-up producer! |
Dear Drew,
What are you getting me for my birthday?
-Shaun
|
I hate to break it to you, but Drew isn't getting you anything for your
birthday. After losing in a heated game of Double Agent Janken to AK and
myself, Mr. Cosner was assigned to buy you the cake. Too bad he ate all the
cake himself, that greedy bastard.
You Say You-maht-sue, I Say OO-eh-mah-tsu |
Someone asked me who composed a song I had playing on my computer
("Aerith's Theme"), and I suddenly realized I have no clue how to pronounce
"Nobuo Uematsu". I'm pretty sure I totally mangled it in the attempt.
Please, oh Enlightened Agent, tell me how to speak the Master's name.

The magic eight ball says: "Your lucky color is red. Drink Coke,

"Noh-boo-oh OO-eh-mah-tsu" might be the answer you're looking for, though.
I had sex :> |
Hey Drew,
Considering I have nothing useful to write about I think I'll ask a question posted in the latest issue of PSM. Would it be
acceptable to put nudity in modern video games, specifically RPGs? Not all out porn mind you, just, if it suited the game, the actual
discussion and event of sex. Its been in movies for years, on TV, and just about everywhere you look its used to sell products, so
what is stopping Sony or Nintendo from taking initiative and just putting a brief scene in a game? I realize parents would freak but
come on, any kid over 10 that doesn't know about it is going to learn it in school anyway.
Make AK deal with the letters on this topic,
Some Commi spy that lives in a gutter
|
That's actually not such a ridiculous prospect -- a number of games (FF VII, Xenogears) have featured off-camera, but heavily implied, sex, and we did see Ramsus sleeping with Miang in Xenogears. Xenogears also featured a fair amount of unexplicit nudity (apparently the designers were too busy thinking about sex to remember to make the game entertaining) -- though the lens flare covering Elly's breasts in the ending serves as a reminder it'll probably be some time before we see RPG characters having explicit cybersex on RPG message boards. But let's not forget the infamous Chu-Chu orgy scene:
"Yes, and then... Chu-Chu and her friends got together and rejoiced over their safety... It was natural for them to have a party, and that sweet, dangerous night went on and on... just like a never-ending dream... No, let's not... It's a whole other story..."
This entire ellipsis-filled narration is accompanied by a blacked-out screen and constant squeaking and grunting sounds in the background. If that's not sex, I'm not sure what is. But don't let me have the final say on it; take the man's advice and make AK deal with the letters on this topic.
