What a disappointment - October 20th, 2001 - Drew Cosner

This is a letters column. Below you will find letters, perhaps with replies to them.

Delays? In the gaming industry?

When is the PS2 modem is to be released? I am having a hard time finding a release date. Some web sites have it listed for Nov. but others are listing it as Spring 2002. I know the Hard Drive was delayed until the Spring 2002, but I thought the modem was a separate add-on. I figured I would ask The GIA, but if it is a national gaming secret, I'll understand. You can trust me, I won't tell a soul...really.

-Jafo

P.S. Muppet...it's "what's for dinner"

Welp, I haven't an exact date, but as far as I know, it's been delayed until around the same time frame as the hard disk. Which kind of stinks, but there's not really any games using it just yet, so no loss I suppose.

Short reply

Drew,

God I love Devil May Cry. My only real problem with the game is that the pistols are too damn weak. You shouldn't make the coolest damn guns in the game peashooters! I would like to say that I may be the only one but, I don't like Ico. I rented it and after about two hours I was bored out of my skull and just went back to playing Time Crisis 2. As for Okage, I really don't feel the need to plunk down fifty buck for it, maybe twenty somewhere down the line.

As for future gaming purchases, well seeing as how my two week paycheck was only $104 dollars. I might pick up Suikoden 2 because I haven't realized that it's been way way way too long since I've played an RPG. I played up to the second disc of Xenogears (second play through) and then I stopped, that was about a month ago. Do I even qualify to be reading The GIA anymore?

I may as well just warn you right now that this won't be the most entertaining column you've ever read. Asking readers what games they were disappointed in is a great way to let people vent publicly, which I always encourage, but it's kind of hard to respond to.

I suppose for the sake of keeping things interesting I could use the same tactics that everyone who writes in to disagree with one of the site's reviews does:

  1. Call the writer a few choice names.
  2. Insinuate that he didn't enjoy the game because he's too stupid to appreciate its brilliance.
  3. Point out that he didn't finish the game, or if he claims to, suggest that he's a liar, because if he'd completed it, he would understand its brilliance.
But I don't have it in me to mock people for disliking any given title; I've certainly encountered my fair share of A titles that simply didn't do it for me. So like I said, short responses today in most cases. Sorry.

Damn Capcom and its difficulty levels!

I got my hands on a copy of Devil May Cry yesterday and I am thoroughly impressed. This game has "cool" written all over it. I have to describe it as Resident Evil meets the Lobby Shootout scene in The Matrix. I just get an overwhelming sense of joy out of knocking some demonic entity into the air with a huge sword, and then pumping him full of lead, keeping him suspended in the air until he explodes into tiny pieces. It's not just button-mashing either. It takes some skill to pull off the cool manuevers and effectively takes out the hordes (and I do mean HORDES) of monsters. It's old school action made with modern technology. Then the problem arose. I've lost my touch at action games. After this relentless onslaught of RPG's and adventure games, where getting to the next area was far more difficult than the fighting, I'm having a tough time with this thing. I'm constantly dying and having to "use my continues." Wow that's not something I've had to do for quite a while. I had better hone my reflexes or this game is going to continue kicking my ass. I hope I'm not alone in this. Is it just me, or is this game actually difficult?

Several people I know who're currently playing through Devil May Cry shared the same basic opinion: it's really, really hard, until you figure out how to pull off all of the smooth combos and really get used to the controls. Apparently the bosses can still be pretty tough even after that, but I haven't heard anyone accusing Devil May Cry of Megaman levels of insane difficulty.

Slight Ico spoilers. Well, not really, but sort of.

Hi !

First of all, I love TheGIA and this column, congratulations. And second, my english is not quite good because Iīm not even from the U.S.

Ok, hereīs the thing, I played ICO and I really liked the ending, it was really moving, but I feelt something was missing... donīt missunderstand me, I think is the best game for the PS2 so far and has itīs own magic because itīs different from any other upcoming game, but Will I never know what Yorda said? I mean, will somebody ever know it? Itīs a shame. But itīs also understable because which words would you expect her to say? She is such a expresive character but also so misterious that it could have ruin the magic of the game.

Maybe this is what make games to really shine and to be in our memories, and this is what makes you feel like you enjoyed the game, and not that you just finished it and saw a half-hour movie that is nothing more than a weak ending.

I have felt that with Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, and some games that are not so popular, like Parasite Eve and Breath of Fire III ( all because of the ending theme in this last one ).

However, if you guys can get the translation or know how to get them, please tell me. Donīt tell me what you think she said, because in that case, I prefer to guess by myself, but would be interesting to hear some opinions about that. Because she say so little that each word must have been perfect. Maybe that could be a good subject to talk about in this column, but that would be a column with extra heavy spoiler content.

Thanxs.

Maybe this letter isnīt very clear, but is really late. And my emotions are mixed after playing ICO, but it sure worth it. I hope you can really read this letter.

-Gustavo

Dream about making a epic like ICO for squaresoft someday, but doesnīt even know wich carreer to study ( and has to decide in a few months... Ž_Ž )

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure no one knows what Yorda was saying, save perhaps the developers. I've heard rumors that there was going to be a "New Game +" mode of sorts where the dialogue would be legible, but it's hard to say how much truth there is behind that. If you happen to know more about this particular hearsay, feel free to educate myself and the other readers.

Can't think of headings

Hey, The biggest disappointment for me was when I bought ICO. The game kicked ass in the demo. Ever since I bought the demo for it I couldn't wait for it to come out. The day it came out I went straight to EB to purchase it and then I raced back home to play. WOW! The game took all of 4 hours my first time to beat. Ten to Eight hours of gameplay my ass! I spent 80 some bucks Canadian for 4 hours and 1 day of enjoyment that I probably won't play again. Great game, though, but should have been way longer and therefore it disappointed me. So I brought it back in exchange for NBA: Street, which will last way longer. ~Jason

I think I'm the only person in the world not particularly upset about Ico's short length. When I found out it was about 8-10 hours, my basic reaction was along the lines of "finally, a game I can finish!" Then again, I did borrow it from a friend rather than buying it, so I guess I'm not getting put out as much as those who paid the full price of admittance.

Master of unlocking

Ahoy-oi!

The voice acting discussion finally hit a chord with me... While perusing thru the new shiny screens of Resident Evil on GameCube, I pondered...."Will they redo the voice acting as well???" More importantly, do we want them to? I don't know if I could live in a world without "Jill Sandwiches" and "Masters of Unlocking".

So, my hat's off to the poor dubs and faulty translations of the world.

Nothing's yet been revealed in that respect, but I'm with you in your hopefulness. I also hope they add about 4 times more bullets throughout the mansion this time around. Trying to be all frugal with ammo is so unappealing after playing Devil May Cry.

Closing comments:

Okay then, for tomorrow, I relatively simple topic: Atlus is finally bringing a Wizardry Stateside. However, I do have to wonder, just how many of you guys are actually interested in playing a PC-style RPG on your console? Why or why not? Why don't you just let me know.
