Save those tears - October 29, 2000 - Andrew Kaufmann

I think yesterday I accidentally said that there are no good games out for the PS2. I didn't
mean it quite like that; just that there are no spectacular games out for the PS2 that warrant
spending a huge amount on the system.
There are definetely good games out, such as Madden 2001 and SSX. But I wouldn't call
either one end-all games. A PS2 isn't necessarily a bad investment, don't get me wrong; but
if you don't have yours yet don't shed too many tears.
More PS2 chit-chat |
AK,
I'm playing Summoner right now (well, uhm, not right this minute but you don't mind, do you?) and the load times aren't that bad... they're nothing compared to how long it still takes to load Fear Effect... It's 1 or 2 seconds at most... and you can play your PSX games too; what other system coming out in the near future (and I'm omitting portables) gives you that option?
To anyone who has it: I'd only sell it to make money, at this point (my PSX's so old it's probably silently thanking me for leaving it alone... so I'm not really even considering that option)... I think your lone Mega Man fan is right: with something like the PS2, it's either total praise or total bashing, and a large in between of sour grapes...
Princess Jemmy, sprinting back to her TV...
P.S.: I think ~Ian P might be taking Chris' motives for 'bashing' what he does express doubt on a little too far... I don't envy you, being stuck in the middle... ;)
|
The load times may not be bad but I think people were hoping the new system would drastically reduce,
if not eliminate, annoying load times with a faster spinner and more advanced stuff. But it evidently
hasn't.
The backwards compatability is great. I have a first generation PSX and the poor thing is really
having to work hard to play games. And now that resale prices are dropping to pretty sane
levels, it's probably a good idea to hold onto your PS2s. Of course, it can still bring a
$100 or $200 profit... which is very nice money.
If only money or PS2s grew on trees |
AK,
Regarding the PS2, I have very little money, so it's either a PS2 or food
and rent for the next month or so.
...
...
I mean, I love gaming, but I doubt very many people love it that much.

PS. Why do I always see Canadian Alliance banners on the GIA? First Day
ignores me at a press conference and now this. It's like they're taunting
me.
|
I feel your pain, Sara. We've all gotta meet those basic survival needs, and
the PS2 just isn't one. I hope you win the lottery sometime soon so you can buy
a big house, a full time caterer, and get a PS2!
As for the Canadian Alliance thing, the official answer I give is that our
advertisements, for the most part, are provided by Flycast and we don't
interact much with what comes on the site. But, I have my suspicions that
Brian Glick, the resident GIA Canadian, is behind it. I'll have my personal special
task force (one of the perks of being a Double Agent guy) investigate the matter.
Forgotten? |
with all this PS2 hype have people forgotten one of the coolest games is
coming out tommorow? Breath of Fire 4 of course.......
- Blue Knight
|
I was pretty disappointed by Breath of Fire 3, but Breath of Fire 4 does look
pretty good. Breath of Fire games never really bring down the world with
their awesomeness but are solid RPGs that pass the time well. I'm not going
to rush out for my copy like Fritz no doubt will, but if you need an RPG, that's
not a bad place to look. You can even play it on your shiny new PS2!
The Mist Cave... so full of... mist |
I know this has nothing to do with xenogears, but i got a really big
question
and i need answer. Im a big rpg fan like you so I play all Squarsoft games.
I
recent played final fantasy 2 again(american version) and now im stuck! The
funny part is that im only in the beggining and im stuck! sad huh.... Well
any ways im at the part where you have to deliver the package to that one
town. But the problem is i cant get through the misty cave. Its so hard to
see. Am i suppose to do something else before I go there?
|
I bet by the time you see this printed you'll have solved your problem, but
I'm betting that you're going to the Mist Cave before you've talked to Kain.
You've got to talk to Kain so he can come along with you to the cave.
I love this guy |
Dear AK,
As one of your biggest fans I have in the past compared you to greats
such as Jay Boor and such.I am a huge fan but some things about thegia are
driving me nuts and so I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer
some of my trivial questions? First, do you watch undressed? personally I
love the show. Will taostyfrog relaunch? I was a huge fan of it but now it's
gone! Have you ever seen a movie by the name of A Midnight Clear? It's my
favorite movie and it's really epic in my opinion.
Ps:REM rox and so does AK!
Kid in the orange shirt.

What a beautifully skillful job of hitting every one of my buttons! I love
trivial questions, I love people that love REM, I love being told I rock,
and I love Jay Boor and love being compared to him even more. What a pal!
First off, I talked to J. Parish, the man behind the Toasty Frog of
www.toastyfrog.com, and his reply was a brief but effective "it's a dead
site." Sorry to dissappoint. Maybe someday JP and the frog will get
over their creative differences and do a reunion tour. But that's just
wishful thinking.
I haven't seen either A Midnight Clear or Undressed... I don't see many
movies or watch much TV. It's a time thing. I do try to watch Norm
and Spin City, but I'm irrated ABC moved Norm to Friday night. Friday night
is not a good TV time. Friday night is going out time. I am upset.
Scary images |
Gilgamesh for president? Hardly. Odin is about 230490 times better. Seifer
just cheated. And plus, would you rather have a guy that does instant death
all the time, or the guy that does 'excalipur' more often than not? Think
about it. Odin forever!

Gilgamesh wasn't at peak form in FF8, but he's a stud overall. To sum it up,
you'd have to read the fine piece of work by Andrew Vestal and myself,
Gilgamesh the Hero.
Behind the times |
Ok, everyone is talking about PS2, and I"m still playing Chrono Cross. Why
am I ALWAYS behind in the times? I mean, it's not my fault my PSX broke, and
I had to borrow another one to play CC! Nooo, the PSX gods just got angry,
that's all! I don't even HAVE that much money (400+!)!!!
Sigh. I love my dreamcast. (Kisses NFL2K1)

Hey, think of it as a blessing, not a curse! People itching for a new RPG
right this moment are playing Summoner, and you're playing Chrono Cross!
I think you've got the upper hand, friend. And as a Dreamcast fan, Skies of
Arcadia is looking pretty sweet. It's not all bad!
He speaks truth |
Hola AK -
I was wondering, what's with all of this Sony negativity? Call me
crazy, but between my three housemates and I (of which I am the
only "hardcore" gamer), that machine in our living room hasn't been
turned off yet. We have enjoyed endless hours of Smuggler's Run,
TimeSplitters, and Tekken Tag since Thursday morning. When a
game wasn't being played, we were watching the DVD's we have
been stockpiling in anticipation. Granted, I am likely still caught up
in the euphoria that is owning something you have waited two
years for, but come on, people. These games aren't perfect, by
any means. I could give you a laundry list of problems; the
rediculous loading time in SR, the weak reload animation and
absence of story in TS, and the weird, shimmery border between
TTT's backgrounds and the fighting floor. But think back to the PS
launch games. They were pretty ass, but we loved them beacuse
it was better than the stuff on our Genesis. I think our
expectations are too high, and that probably has a lot to do with all
the hype surrounding the system. But come on...I really don't
think the thing is as bad as y'all say it is. Not worth 15,000 bucks
on eBay, but I was happy waiting in line for it.
Oh, and to our dear friend Ian P....I think we should band all
together and send Chris a whole series of PS2 and DQVII-clad
gamers for Christmas or something...

Proof that the PS2 really is a great system. I haven't doubted that
for a minute, just that right now there might not be a slew of games
that RPG fans will be turned on to. The PS2 has a lot going for it
right now, and while I wouldn't pay $500 for one or stand in line
for a day, I do want one. And that's the bottom line, isn't it?
Closing Comments:
Chris will be here tomorrow. It'll be fun. But only if you email him! Take care, have
a great week!
