The three Pokémon in the top row are the new starting Pokémon. Instead of selecting the pool of Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur, the hero gets to choose from the anteater-like fire Pokémon on the left, the leafy grass Pokémon in the middle, and the water-based alligator Pokémon on the right. (The original starting Pokémon are still available for capture later in the game; you're just not given the chance to start with them.)
The two Pokémon in the bottom row are simply two of the 100 or so new Pokémon up for grabs.
