ITEMS TO GET: Phoenix Down

   The Prima Vista has "landed" in the Evil Woods. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and Shina is blocking the entrance, so you're left with no choice but to explore the woods. Collect the Phoenix Down from the lone ! spot and save your game if you wish. Head south into the woods proper.

   Two kinds of enemies can be found in this section of the woods: Fangs and the standard Final Fantasy-style Goblins. The former may yield Hi-Potions or Phoenix Downs when you steal from it; the Goblins just give Potions. Fight your way down the path until you reach the second screen. VIVI and Steiner are here; head north to fight the Prisoncase that's captured Garnet.

   Zidane and Steiner team up for this battle. At the beginning, Zidane explains about Trance Mode (FF IX's equivalent of a Limit Break). He then goes into such a mode, allowing him to use a very powerful special attack (Frenzy) that deals over 250 HP damage per shot. Make use of it while you can and you should have no trouble defeating the Prisoncase -- just make sure not to attack Garnet by accident. (The boss is the first, and default, target, while Garnet is the second.) If Garnet's HP gets low, use a Potion on her; you'll have to tap left to switch to the enemy side of the field in order to target Garnet.

   However, the Prisoncase isn't dead yet. It discards Garnet and captures VIVI. A fresh battle begins, and one without Trance power on your side. VIVI, however, does help you out by casting Fire on his captor. While the Prisoncase didn't carry any items in the last fight, this time you can steal a Broad Sword (useless, since Steiner already has one) or an upgraded wrist (not useless) from it. The latter may be worth the time to steal, especially since VIVI can learn a new spell from it. To kill the boss, just pelt it with normal attacks (Steiner's attack is particularly powerful) and use a Potion or two if you need healing. The Prisoncase goes down for good this time, and Zidane, Steiner, and VIVI return to the ship.
