MSTing of "The Final Fantasy I Script" Part One

Daniel Seltzer

(Note from the MSTer: Normally, when I MST something, it's because I hate it. Not in this case. I love FF1. I MSTed this for several reasons: 1. RPGamer had been slow in putting up new editorials, and I wanted to MST something. 2. To poke some mild fun at the rather poor translation of this game. 3. For fun! I hope you enjoy this...thanks to Bugen for inspiring this with his idea (even though he never completed it) of MSTing FF2's script, J. Brian Ferguson (even though I do poke fun at him once or twice in this MSTing) for compiling this script, and our board's resident dryad for putting this up on her page. Enjoy!)

(Note from Ellcrys: Like many MSTers nowadays, Daniel doesn't use Tom, Crow, and Joel/Mike in his MSTs, but adds creativity to the idea by using his own characters, who Daniel describes as such:
Hator Berserkin: A 7'6" warrior. He speaks almost entirely in grunts (except when he's angry), but his grunts are so incredibly eloquent that this doesn't hamper his speech at all. He's easily the strongest of all of my MSTers and wields a falchion (a sort of sword) that glows either red, yellow, or blue.
Yator Berserkin: A 5'0" healer. He whines and babbles constantly, and often won't shut up. He is extremely puny, and the others often call him stupid.
Halzamon Harmoon: A sorcerer. He speaks almost entirely in sarcastic or pessimistic statements. He is arguably the most powerful of my MSTers, if they all got into a fight, either he or Hator would win.
Oh, and another thing... the MST is quite long, so it's in 4 parts. There's a little menu type thing I added at the bottom for easy navigation. Now on with the MST... oh, there's more from Daniel. ^_^)

(Note from the MSTer: For your convenience, I kept this key in here, but didn't MST it... I did, however, remove an intro written by the author and some author's notes at the end.)

- KEY -

I will be using some shorthanded symbols and single letters throughout this script,
so if you wish to FULLY understand it, I would recommend reading this portion.
There's not that many, so take the time now and you'll be better off knowing what
everything means. Oh, also, text formation is as it appears in the game--meaning
it is an *exact* representation..down to spacing and words per line. For sanity's
sake the only text not appearing here is the brief dialogue in the: INN, ITEM, and
MAGIC shops which all just rehash the same prattle anyhoo. It is divded into 4 PARTS
and sub-divided into 10 CHAPTERS for easier navigation and use.

(r) = this dialogue is *repeated* elsewhere via another source.

(s) = character is *stationary* and does not move.

LW = LIGHT WARRIORS (Hikari no Senshi)

FTR = For the record.

WTH = What the heck!?

= usually comes directly after a piece of dialogue--meant
to imply some sort of action taking place.

{*} = only used once [Dwarf Cave] in this script, it's supposed to be a substitution
for a graphic of the bracelet that is used in the dialogue box.

Chapter 1 - *Arrivals*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- CONERIA PRAIRIE
(Opening of Prologue)
A warrior in training (as well as the remaining three LIGHT
WARRIORS--just not visible due to Squ/\re's party design [Ed: Square fans have
taken notice of this and Square has now, for the first time ever in the FF series,
created multiple characters on the overworld for FF8; ala Dragon Quest!) stands
transfixed, facing east, as if to greet the morning sun. To the north lies a
bustling town named Coneria. It's magnificant castle looms high enough to touch
the passing clouds. Surrounding this city is a great forest--acting as it's
ever-vigilant guardian. To the south, a port for docking ships is apparent.
The adventurers venture northward...
Halzamon: Funny, I see a 16 pixel sprite moving up into a 4 16 pixel square large castle...
Yator: So do I. I wonder where he drew all that out from. We must be REALLY unobservant.
Hator: (Grunts in a manner affirming his lack of perception)
* * *
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- SOUTH ENTRANCE
The party of four warriors saunters into the town. It appears an
average town (aside from a bubbling brook that runs though it)
Yator: That's BABBLING brook...
Hator: (Grunts in a manner asking what the heck a babbling brook is, anyways, and how you can tell it babbles when all you can hear is the ANNOYING town music)
Yator: I like the town music...
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.
Halzamon: Though I LOVE sauntering all over the place...saunter, saunter, saunter...
Yator: You know, I always went into the castle first, anyways....
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.
with the usual
going-on's. An inn is located near the entrance, a weapons and armor shop
is on the west end. Further north holds training centers for magicians to be.
An useful item shop is to the east, and above it lies the clinic for the sick
and hurt citizens. In the center of the town we see a refreshing water fountain.
Several Conerian soldiers patrol the town to uphold order and to protect the
citizens from whatever should arise.
Halzamon: Yeah, I sure saw lots of soldiers in the game..
Hator: (Grunts, looking for them)
Yator: This guy is taking "creative license" a bit too far.
WOMAN: (greeting) This is Coneria, the
dream city.
Yator: Yeah, it looks like something out of a bad acid trip more than a dream, though.
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- WATER FOUNTAIN
ARYLON: I am Arylon, the Dancer! (bearing some skin ta boot)
Halzamon: She's bearing skin? Cool! She's carrying skin around...
Yator: I think he meant BARING, Hal.
*******
NOTE: Inspection of the 'fountain' merits you this text..
See your face upon the clean water. How dirty!
Come! Wash your face!
Hator: NO!!! I DON'T WANT TO!!!
*******
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- OUTSIDE SHOPS
FIRST OFFICER: WARRIORS.
Revive the Power of
the ORBS!
Halzamon:: Oooh...I just looove that capitalization...
Yator: How the heck did he figure out that that guy was a first officer, anyways?
Hator: (Grunts asking the same question)
*******
NOTE: Inspection of a 'well' merits you this text..
This is a well. You
might think that there
is something to it----
But in fact it is just
an ordinary well.
Hator: (Grunts in a manner saying, "The translation to this game is hell. You might think that there is something to it--- but in fact is it just an ordinary hell.")
*******
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- NEAR MAGIC CENTERS
ELDERLY WOMAN: Please!
Save the Princess!
Halzamon: Whoa...that must be THE most original plot I've ever heard!
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- BEHIND BLACK MAGIC CENTER
OLD MAN: (s) Lukahn left this town,
to join his colleagues
at Crescent Lake.
Hator: (Grunts in a manner saying, "and we care BECAUSE?")
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- NORTH ENTRANCE
GUARD: The King is sure that
someday the LIGHT
WARRIORS will come to
save the Princess,
just as in Lukahn's
prophecy.
Yator: (LW) Why should we go help some worthless fatalistic king! If he's so gullible to believe some person who has hallucinations after living on bugs for a year, then he doesn't DESERVE any help!
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- OUTSIDE OF CLINIC
WOMAN: Please!
Save the Princess! (r)
Yator: I think I've heard that before....
Hator: (slaps Yator, then grunts in a manner saying, "That's what the (r) is for, dummy")
Yator: Oops, sorry...
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- EAST ENTRANCE
BOY: My home is Pravoka, a
beautiful port city far
east of here.
Halzamon: My home is in the Square translation office of 1990...a stupid place far to the west of here..
(FTR, the population of _Coneria_ is a scant 15--including the guards and
the employees of the shops and services.)
Yator: And your point is?
Halzamon: Um, 15 is a LOW population for a city, Yator.
Yator: It is?
Hator: (Grunts the affirmative)
Yator: You're sure?
Halzamon: Yes, Yat..
Yator: I never knew that before...
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.
* * *
EXTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE
Exiting Coneria, the party expediently approaches the awe-inspiring
castle--towering high above: it's citizens, the town, and the great forest
that surrounds and protects it. A beacon to civilization and an monument
to a thriving economy.
Halzamon: A thriving economy with 15 people in it, to boot!
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- FRONT ENTRANCE
The warriors boldly enter the spacious and palatial Coneria Castle.
A great hall of colossal marble pillars spans athwart many times over.
They are eagerly greeted and questioned by a guard.
GUARD: (s) The King is looking for
the LIGHT WARRIORS. You
do not happen to be them
do you?
Yator: (LW) The Light Warriors are looking for a good translator. You do not happen to be Ted Woolsey, do you?
INTERIOR: CASTLE CONERIA -- FIRST FLOOR -- SMALL LIVING QUARTERS
(The warriors decide to do a little snoopin' before they talk to the
King..WITH permission, of course.) Inside the room there is a table and
four stools. Toward the back of the room is a fireplace which is lavishly
constructed of the finest medals and stone in the land.
Halzamon: Pretty good deduction from a system with 64 colors.
PRINCESS'S SISTER: (worried) Oh---- My sister----
The warriors explore further..
INTERIOR: CASTLE CONERIA -- FIRST FLOOR -- OUTSIDE OF QUEEN'S CHAMBERS
QUEEN'S GUARD: (s) In sadness, the Queen
locked herself inside.
Hator: (LW) (Grunts in a manner indicating that they break down the door)
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- INSIDE QUEEN'S CHAMBERS
(obviously, he/she lets you inside)
Perched on a throne, sits the Queen contemplating her daughter's
fate. She feels sorrow for her but is helpless to remedy the situation.
The same baroque fireplace sits in the rear of the room.
QUEEN JANE: I am Jane, Queen of
Coneria. Please save my
daughter, Princess Sara.
Hator: (Grunts in a manner saying "See?")
Yator: Shouldn't there be an H at the end of that name?
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- HALLS WEST OF STAIRS
WOMAN: Please!
Save the Princess! (r)
Yator: I think I've- (sees look on Hator's face) Never mind.
INVISIBLE (yes, invisible) WOMAN: (s) The Princess was
looking for you!
Halzamon: (LW) AARRRGH!!! STOP THE VOICES IN MY HEAD!!!
SCHOLAR: Garland used to be a
good knight until----
Hator: (Grunts in a manner saying, "until he discovered the wonders of drugs!")
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- NORTHERN HALL
(still exploring)
OLD MAN: (s) 400 years ago the
Treasury was locked by
the mystic KEY. Our
ancestors gave the KEY
to the Prince of ElfLand
for safekeeping.
Yator: Umm....why?
Halzamon: So you'd have to go through an annoying set of steps to get the treasure...duh...
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- OUTSIDE TREASURY
OLD MAN: (s) 400 years ago the
Treasury was locked by
the mystic KEY. Our
ancestors gave the KEY
to the Prince of ElfLand
for safekeeping.
Yator: I think-
Hator: (Bashes Yator over the head)
Yator: Ow, what was that for?
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- SOUTH WING
GUARD: (s) Reports say that Garland
holds the Princess in a
Temple to the northwest.
Halzamon: (LW) Really? I thought it was a temple to the south! I was looking forward to swimming across the water...
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- OUTSIDE KING'S THRONE ROOM
The LIGHT WARRIORS head north passing through another hall
of marble pillars. Before them is the King's room.
KING'S GUARD: The King is looking for
the LIGHT WARRIORS. You
do not happen to be them
do you? (r)
Yator: (mumbles a question under his breath)
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- KING'S THRONE ROOM
Adorned with the finest ameneties and surrounded by dragons
carved of pure gold the King's throne room sparkles with royalty.
The King sits knowing that somehow someway Lukahn's prophecy is true
yet is quite worried all the same. The party collectively advance
to meet the King of Coneria.
Halzamon: I just loooove the deductions he makes from 16 pixel sprites and 64 colors...I wish I could be so observant...
KING OF CONERIA: LIGHT WARRIORS---- Just as
in Lukahn's prophecy.
Garland has kidnapped
the Princess. Please
help her!!
Hearing the King's plea of help to save his daughter, the
LIGHT WARRIORS set out to rescue her from the evil Garland.
But first they rest at the Conerian inn until morning--then
set out on their long journey north.
Yator: Actually, it's pretty short, and it's to the northwest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 2 - *The Rescue*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXTERIOR: CONERIA
Dawn.
Halzamon: Sentence fragments.
The four warriors--renewed by a night's rest and equipped
w/adaquate gear--begin their trek northward to the Temple of Fiends, where
Garland holds the Princess.
* * *
EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- FOREST CLEARING -- IN FRONT OF TEMPLE
The LIGHT WARRIORS traversed through the treacherous Fiend Forest
to the evil (and disheveled) Temple of Fiends. Garland awaits! The
four UNwelcomed guests heedfully tread inside.
All: Heedfully?
Yator: I don't think that's a word...
Halzamon: Even if it is, it's not appropriate to the situation...
INTERIOR: TEMPLE OF FIENDS -- THRONE ROOM
Boldly the LIGHT WARRIORS make their way inside and advance to
the central room where the iniquitous Garland resides.
Yator: Ooh, big words...
Halzamon: Don't tell me you don't know what iniquitous means....
Yator: I don't! Really! Surely you don't expect me to know it...
Halzamon and Hator: Yeah, but you're stupid.
Slowly they
open the doors, only to meet their eyes: Garland surrounded by several
bats?
Halzamon: Good question.
Hator: (Grunts in agreement)
and perched upon his throne--Princess in tow.
Yator: Actually, she looks a good distance behind him, to me...
BAT(S): Kee---- Kee----
Hator: (Grunts in a manner sounding vaguely like, "Vee....vee..."
GARLAND: (furious) No one touches my
Princess!!
LIGHT WARRIORS??
You impertinent fools.
I, Garland, will knock
you all down!!
Yator: Knock us down and then-
Halzamon: THIS IS A G-RATED MST, YATOR!!! NO HENTAINESS ALLOWED!!!!
Hator: (Grabs Yator's tongue and picks Yator up in the air by it)
The LW defeat Garland with ease--hm. Maybe something more is
behind this abduction? The true objective seems yet to be found.
PRINCESS: (gratefully) So, you are the
LIGHT WARRIORS!
Thank you.
Halzamon: Gratefully? Really? I expected her to be annoyed that you saved her from the evil clutches of Garland.
Yator: (having extricated himself from Hator's grasp) Why did he abduct her, anyways?
Hator: (speaking for once) Because she's a princess, idiot...don't you know of that absolute video game convention?
Yator: Nope. I didn't...
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.
* * *
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- KING'S THRONE ROOM
After safely arriving back home the LIGHT WARRIORS return to see the
King once again. This time with Princess Sara.
PRINCESS: This LUTE has been
passed down from Queen
to Princess for 2000
years, Garland stole it
when he kidnapped me.
Please accept it as my
gift, it just might come
in handy.
Halzamon: (LW) Yeah, I can now rupture the monster's eardrums with my awful musical skills!
KING: Thank you for saving the
Princess. To aid your
quest I ordered a bridge
built to the continent.
Go now, and make the
ORBS shine again!!
Yator: Kind of strange that he didn't have such an incredibly useful bridge built ahead of time...
Halzamon: Oh, no problem, it's easy to have a kingdom with a thriving economy with 15 citizens and being in complete isolation.
PRINCESS: Now, get ready for your
trip, and make the ORBS
shine again.
KING: The Princess always
worries about you.
Yator: -
Halzamon: NO HENTAI! HENTAI=EVIL!!
Yator: YOU DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY, THOUGH!
*******
Note: These latter two dialogues are repeated throughout
the course of the game.
*******
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- OUTSIDE KING'S ROOM
GUARD: Thank you for rescuing
the Princess. (r)
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- SECOND FLOOR -- SOUTH WING
GUARD: Thank you for rescuing
the Princess. (r)
Yator: I think I've heard this one bef-OUCH!! Hat, cut it out!
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- BENEATH FIRST FLOOR STAIRS
Eager to check out the new bridge the LIGHT WARRIORS make their
way down to the first floor.
GUARD: (attentively) Yes Sir!!
I belong to the Honor
Guard of Castle Coneria.
All: (snicker loudly)
Halzamon: (Guard) Yes Sir!! I belong to the Horror Guard of Castle Corneria!
INTERIOR: CASTLE CONERIA -- FIRST FLOOR -- OUTSIDE QUEEN'S CHAMBERS
GUARD: Thank you for rescuing
the Princess. (r)
Yator: I think— OUCH!!! HEEEEELP!!!!
INTERIOR: CASTLE CONERIA -- FIRST FLOOR -- INSIDE QUEEN'S CHAMBERS
QUEEN JANE: Thank you for saving
Princess Sara.
Yator: Funny that she refers to her daughter by her formal title.
Halzamon: Oh, Sara's not Jane's daughter...Sara's the result of a "youthful indiscretion" of the king.
INTERIOR: CASTLE CONERIA -- FIRST FLOOR -- CORRIDERS/HALLS
WOMAN: Thank you for rescuing
the Princess. (r)
Yator:...Wait, never mind.
SCHOLAR: Legend says that the
LUTE can break the evil
gate.
Yator: Legend says the Lute can break the evil game.
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- PRINCESS' SISTER'S QUARTERS
PRINCESS' SISTER: (overjoyed) My sister is back safe!
Thank you.
INTERIOR: CONERIA CASTLE -- FIRST FLOOR -- NEAR ENTRANCE
GUARD: Yes Sir!!
I belong to the Honor
Guard of Castle Coneria. (r)
* * *
EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- NORTH BRIDGE
Quite massive and expansive it will surely stand true for many
years to come. Night befalls soon so the LWs head back into town for rest
and to restock their much needed supplies in this dangerous world.
* * *
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- OUTSIDE MAGIC CENTERS
OLD WOMAN: North of Coneria lives
a witch named Matoya.
Yator: And we care BECAUSE?
EXTERIOR: CONERIA -- NEAR CLINIC
WOMAN: Matoya has poor
eyesight. She needs the
CRYSTAL to see.
Yator: The game's translators have poor eyesight. They need to know more than one or two words of English to translate the game.
Hator: (Grunting in a manner saying, "Which, of course, they don't.")
Chapter 3 - *Of Witches and Wind*
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

*******
NOTE: This is merely a sidetrack or diversion from
the _true flow_ of the game but if you go back
to the Temple of Fiends you can examine the ORB behind
Garland and the captive Princess.

Inspection of the 'ORB' merits you this text..

The black ORB
glitters ominously....
But nothing happens.

Yator: The black orb glitters stupidly...but nothing happens.
Halzamon: The black orb glitters hentaily...but nothing printable in this MST happens.
*******

EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- CROSSING NORTH BRIDGE
(Closing of Prologue)

Yator: (Starts whistling along with the "Bridge Crossing" Theme.)
Hator: STOP THAT DAMNED WHISTLING!!!!
Yator: I don't want to.

And so their
journey begins----

What awaits the
Four, they do
not know.

Halzamon: But we do know.

Each holding an
ORB, that 2000
years ago shined
with beauty from
within. But now,
only darkness.

Yator: Each translator had a brain, that 2000 years ago shined with beauty from within. But now, only darkness.

Come!!
Start your
journey!
Return the light
of peace to our
world.

EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- MATOYA'S CAVE

Crossing the channel the LW embark into new territory. As
they pass, they notice another port and traverse through a valley.
Continuing north the party enters a large forest, although very dense
our warriors manage to negotiate their way through. They spot a cave
just outside the forest and for now..investigate.

INTERIOR: MATOYA'S CAVE -- OUTSIDE INNER ROOM

BROOM: ----TCELES B HSUP
A magic spell?

Yator: No, it's a ticklish board member that hisses.
Hator: (Grunts in a way saying: "Only you could try to say that out loud.")
Yator: What, Aren't I supposed to?
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.

(Push 'B' button and 'select' simultaneously to access the world map.)

INTERIOR: MATOYA'S CAVE -- SANCTUM

Creepy and full of skulls, Matoya's Cave certainly
falls into the 'witch' category of interior design, ne?

Yator: Ne! Ne! Ne! We are the MSTers who go NE!!!
Halzamon: That's NI, Yat...
Yator: Really? I didn't know that...
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.

BROOM(S): ----TCELES B HSUP
A magic spell? (r)

MATOYA: Where, is my CRYSTAL?
I can't see anything
without it---- Who stole
my CRYSTAL?

Halzamon: (LW) I did! HA HA!!

* * *

EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD

Knowledge gained; once again the LIGHT WARRIORS seek
the unknown, this time eastward. Through deserts, swamps, and
forests the party of four wages on.... to find a (normally)
bustling port town named Pravoka.

Yator: I hate to burst your creative bubble, but there are no swamps or deserts between Coneria and Pravoka.
* * *

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA

A harbor town surrounded by water and brick, Pravoka
is larger than Coneria and is more linear in design.
Strangely absent are the citizens. Only 2 visible?

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- NEAR ENTRANCE

MAN: Help!

Hator: (LW) (Grunts in a manner saying, "We don't want to!")

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- CENTER OF TOWN

DUDE w/MOHAWK: This town has been
invaded by pirates.

Yator: AAAAARRGH!!!! This guy's blue hair is searing my eyes!

(could this guy be related to General Leo??..nah)

Halzamon: Um....General Leo had a mohawk?
Yator: I always thought he did.
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- WEST END OF TOWN

BIKKE: Aye, I am Bikke the
Pirate, and surprised I
am that you scurvy dogs
have the nerve to face
me.
Mates!
Get those landlubbers!

LW kick pirate butt.

BIKKE: (grumbly) Okay, you got me.
Take my SHIP.

All: Grumbly?

BIKKE: I won't be any more
bother. I promise.

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- RESIDENTIAL AREA NORTH OF ITEM SHOP

MAN: Thank you. We don't need
to be afraid of pirates
anymore.

Yator: (LW) No, but you have to be afraid of us! (Slash)

YOUNG WOMAN: The Elves live across
the sea. Matoya's HERB
is the only thing that
will wake their Prince.

Halzamon: You mean, the ruler formerly known as Prince.
Hator: (Smashes Halzamon (not Yator this time) over the head for the TERRIBLE joke)

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- CENTER OF TOWN

DUDE w/MOHAWK: Ships can stop only at
ports. There are no
ports in the north.

Halzamon: Gee, how logical...
Yator: Yeah, makes perfect sense to me!
Hator and Halzamon: Yeah, but you're stupid.

MAN: There are many dangerous
monsters in the sea.
Be careful!

EXTERIOR: PRAVOKA -- OUTSIDE OF WHITEMAGIC CENTER

OLD MAN: I have escaped from
Melmond, in the west.
My town is in trouble.
Please help them!!

Hator: (Grunts in a manner asking how we could help without knowing anything about the place)

MAN: Thank you. We don't need
to be afraid of pirates
anymore. (r)

EXTERIOR: OVERWORLD -- PRAVOKA HARBOR

Just outside Pravoka the LIGHT WARRIORS gaze upon
the massive billowing sails of their newly won ship. The LW
take to the Aldi Sea in search of Elves..be it more, be
it less. AHOY!

Yator: You're getting carried away with your creative license again...
