Unjammer Lami shows her face
[01.07.98] » The pseudo-sequel to PaRappa the Rapper
is unveiled, with a new heroine but the same classic gameplay.
With the both critical and commercial success
of PaRappa the Rapper, a sequel was inevitable, and creators Rodney
Greenblat and Masaya Matsuura wasted no time in getting to work --
the original game even featured an ad for the sequel. After the
initial announcement, however, things were quiet... until now.
| *gasp* Does Sunny know about this? |
Sony surprised many earlier this week by
announcing that the "sequel" to PaRappa would feature a completely new
main character and would use rock music instead of rap -- what would happen
to our beloved hero? A new Japanese TV commercial, however, shows that
PaRappa may not be gone after all -- he has a prominent role in the
commercial, and Katy Kat is in the game as well.
As for Lami herself, she's seen playing guitar
in a few brief snippets of gameplay footage. The game appears to play
similar to PaRappa, but Lami and Katy Kat take turns playing, which
is probably how the promised two-player mode will be incorporated. Watch
the top of the screen during the commercial and you'll see Katy Kat and
Unjammer Lami icons alternating in the green box.
It may not be the direct sequel PaRappa fans were
(and still are) hoping for, but at least PaRappa himself is back, and
hopefully other favorites such as Chop-Chop Master Onion and Jet Baby
will return as well. We'll find out for sure when the game hits Japan
this March -- although there's been no word on a North American release,
the original game sold reasonably well, it's likely that it will cross
the Pacific. As always, stay tuned to GIA for any further developments.
