Double Agent

Okay, let's get this puppy going.

It's been a lazy day chez Milligan. Meeting the only friend of my sister's that I actually hold any respect for. Playing Wild Arms. Rechecking my archive revisions. Working on-and-off on some Vaults. Busy work, essentially.

Luckily, the letters world is a lot more interesting. Questions over banners, fanfic, the FFIX stuff, and the long rant against me that kicks off today's column. Lots of vitriol. And, of course, I keep my cool and deal with the situation in my usual, even-handed and open-minded manner, showing the deepest respect for all people.

I am the Buddha, I tell you.

Tee hee.

Taking me to task

I don't think you can say that Persona is too esoteric and gounchallenged. Sure, to the ignorant populace at large (including myselfon many games), Persona is like fried bugs. Exotic, gross, uncool andshunned. But did anyone notice the 3/4 view rooms and battles? (also inBreath of Fire) Was anyone shocked at the combination of summonedmonsters and normal spellcasting? (Final Fantasy has both in abundance)Was there a call from the peanut gallery when you move down thecorridors in a DOOM-style engine? What about the casino minigames, FMV,or the variable endings? Are the ubiquitous level-up system and theopportunity to name your main character so far out of the human ken? Theone gameplay feature that anyone can scream at as being less-thantraditional is the map screen, which is decidedly strange. But to call agame esoteric on the basis of one aspect is an overblown barb. And ifyou think the subject is esoteric, then take a second look at FinalFantasy and you tell me if calling massive monsters out of nowhere tohelp your party and your party only is all too normal. Persona is set inthe modern day with modern weapons and modern modalities. If that's tooobscure for you, then I don't know how to explain the nonsensicalitiesof Seiken Densetsu. And if you think that the subject matter isoffensive, then tell me that Square's obsession with fallen angels (I anaware of the pun, don't get any ideas), killing 'god', and destroyingthe -Ethos- (Church) is anything resembling high Christian sensibility(by the way, I wholly support Square's religion bashing). Persona'sreputation as an "esoteric" title stems from its non-Square productionand box-package impressions. Playing the game is not dissimilar fromplaying any other RPG. The game it resoundingly recalls is Final Fantasy6, if we were to draw a non-Megaten parallel, with its choice ofsupporting characters and Esper system. While you exaggerate greatly inyour post as Double Agent, Persona-as-alien doesn't hold water even inthat context.

And while I'm still pissed, I'll tell you a little story. There once wasa game with a title character who said absolutely nothing. From the timehe got out of bed to the time he finished the game he said hardly a wordat all. But he still managed to kick butt and win the hearts of manygamers. The man was Crono, the game was Chrono Trigger, and Square didwell with it, which infuriates me that you hold that very same qualityagainst 7th Saga. You just don't know how to play anything differentthan mainstream, do you? There's only so much variation from the normyou can tolerate, isn't there? So long as our differences are only skindeep, everything's ok, right? Take it to the cleaners, pal.

The nickname thing doesn't work anymore, so I don't have a funnynickname like the patron of small furry animals that bite passerby whenthey make funny faces at them or anything like that

- The phattest righteously gay jamboree and a big bag of an abandoned warehouse

My my my. Such vitriol. Let's see what we can say here.

First of all, Persona is about as esoteric as RPGs get in North America. In a market where fantasy-styled RPGs with emphasis on direct spellcasting and swordplay are paramount, Persona sticks out like a sore thumb. This is not a criticism, as you seem to take it. In terms of the modern-with-supernatural setting, in terms of the importance of the Persona manipulation system's intricacy and importance, in terms of the first-person dungeon (a rarity, these days), it is NOT like every other game out there. It it frequently recommended to me as a title to play if I'm feeling tired of same-old, same-old. It contains familiar elements, ones that you can pick out and attribute to many a source, but it's the combination that makes it unique. And unique it is. Quite simply, I don't think it's like everything else out there. I don't think it's typical. I think that's a good thing, and why I recommend it so highly to fellow gamers who feel exasperated with the RPG genre.

By the same token, Persona really seems to be a hit-or-miss title with people. I know some who swear by it, claiming it's the most innovative, clever, and deep traditional RPG in the US to date. Others quickly found themselves lost and uninvolved, and tossed it aside as being "not my cuppa." I receive at least one letter every two weeks that champions Persona for being unique, and one every three that damns it for being too weird for its own good. With due respect, experience, gut feeling, and a job interacting with RPG players every day teaches me that Persona is NOT as mainstream as you claim. You've shown where many elements are drawn from, but you've failed to recognize how the whole they form impacts on gamers as a whole. As a whole, as a gameplay experience, Persona really is out of the norm, bless it. You're the first person I've ever seen who refutes that view, and I've got about two hundred emails that support it. Tell me again why describing it as "esoteric" is unsupportable.

Second, regarding my bashing 7th Saga, I know perfectly well how to play non-mainstream games. More to the point, I am perfectly capable and willing to rip into games like 7th Saga, not because they're not in the mainstream, but because they suck. 7th Saga's characters lacked personality, and animation, and spirit. Crono said nothing in his game, but he was superbly animated and worked into the plot. He had shrugs and leaps and gestures. His actions drove the plot and involved the players, even without dialogue. 7th Saga's characters were totally interchangeable. They never made choices, they were just led around from dungeon to dungeon like pixellated cattle. The difference between Crono and any 7th Saga character is like that between watching Don Johnson and Al Pacino in a movie. They're technically doing the same thing, acting, but only one is worth watching.

The subject line of this letter was "I am mad at everyone and everything except one person, and you're not her, so take this", by the way. It kinda shows, doesn't it?

The List

Hey Allan, what games have you played? I bet I've played more RPGs than you have! haHA!

- Lego maniac

I won't list off all the games I've played, because that'd take a really, really long time. So I'll resort to the second challenge, naming all the console RPGs and kinda-RPGs I've played, off the top of my head. Here goes...

Dragon Warrior 1-4, Dragon Quest V-VI, Remix I+II and Remix III. Final Fantasy 1-7, plus the demo of 8. Phantasy Star 1-4. Shining Force 1-3 (first scenario only), SF CD, and SF: Sword of Hajya for Game Gear. Pokemon, Red and Blue. Rolan's Curse, for GB. Final Fantasy Adventure. Final Fantasy Legends 1-3. Romancing SaGa. Legend of Oasis, Beyond Oasis, and Warriors of Oasis. Destiny of the Emperor. Dark Saviour, for Saturn. Panzer Dragoon Saga. Drakkhen. Eye of the Beholder. Dark Wizard. All three Breath of Fires. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (I say it's an Action/RPG, damnit). Both Neutopias. Azure Dreams. The two lame-ass Ultima games for Gameboy. Secret of Evermore. Earthbound Zero (not an official release, but I played it).

I'm probably forgetting a few. Notable ones I never did get to play: Magic Knight Rayearth, and my rental of Legend of Legaia ended up being a bust, since it won't play properly on Virtual GameStation, and my PSX is busted. Damn. Anyhow, I have played every one of the above. I finished most of them, no less.

Tell me again that I play nothing but mainstream RPGs.

Fan service for the gay porn crowd

I''m not really sure if you're familliar with "fan service", but it's a term that refers to anime/manga creators putting stuff into their work that isn't necessarily necessary, but is for the fans. HOWEVER, fan service also has a connotation of half naked (or totally naked) girls in anime (not to mention panty shots...dear GOD theres a lot of panty shots). Why am I emailing a RPG/Adventure site about this? Quite simple, your fanart section is WAYYYYYYYYYYY TOOOOOO fan service-sy to females. In the past TWO selections theres been nude Link, and nude crew from Breath O' Fire 3. True it's not full frontal nudity (thank GOD it's not full frontal nudity) but still, I feel that us males are being deprived our scantily clad and/or naked rpg heroines.

Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with putting half/fully naked guys in the fanart section, but I want equal oppurtunity fan service. Please tell Andrea to fix this before I have to come down there and lay the smack down on the collective GIA crew.

Also, why the hell aren't there more black guys in RPGs? And what was Square smoking when they made Barrett sound like Mr. T? Just a few thoughts

~Riisuke

To misquote Andrea, "I don't know why people are sending me gay porn." If you guys wanna see more scantily-clad ladies in fan art, send 'em in. Make them tasteful and artistically brilliant, of course, but if we keep on getting well-drawn fan service for our female readers, that's what we're gonna post.

Personally, I think it's great that we've got scantily clad men lounging around our fan art section. It's certainly a change of pace. And it makes AK so very hot and bothered...

Ahem. Lastly, representation of blacks in Japanese entertainment as a whole is pretty slim. Caucasians, sure. People of Asian descent, no prob. But there are more guys with blue hair than black skin in anime and video games. I really don't know the root cause, but for some reason, Japanese kids and teens just don't seem interesting in watching and playing black characters. Ergo, the ported results aren't exactly a Benetton ad.

Reality vs. Final Fantasy

In you're farce article about FF9 you mention Shiva (Siva) and call hima her. Shiva is a male deity NOT a female. As profesional journalistsyou should be more careful.

I've been waiting to use that letter title for months now, you realize.

Anyhow, I do realize that Shiva is, in reality, considered to be a male entity (though aspects of Shiva, such as Kali, are regarded as being female). However, in the Squareverse, Shiva is consistently portrayed as being female - she's sporting a rather large bust in FF7, and so forth. Tradition, plus the rather effeminate-looking design she sports in our FFIX pictures, leads us to refer to Shiva as a her. If we were talking about Hinduism, we would indeed be in error. But a professional journalists know about context, and within the context of the Final Fantasy series, Shiva is a she, and we will refer to her as such.

Banner dissent

Hey Allan.

Now I'm not bashing the site's banners: I understand the need for them, and applaud the GIA staff for taking the initiative to put banners upwhen they might have alienated a lot of visitors. My complaints aren'tagainst the banners themselves.

However, the contents of the banners DO upset me, to a degree. Themessages I see on the banners seem aimed at eight-year-olds with aninferiority complex, not the more mature group that I associate withserious RPG-playing. Do we really need ANOTHER person telling us that"you can make a difference!" or "drugs are baaaad"?

What I'm getting at is this: Were those banners the only ones you couldget up? I understand if the GIA's selection of banners was limited, butseeing as how the GIA is a relatively upstanding and important gamingsite on the Internet (hey, y'all got tickets to E3), you could have atleast been able to get gaming-related banners. What's the deal withthese public service announcements?

-Matt Blackie

Allen,

I know that there have been some rumblings concerning the recent shifttoward banners, but I for one would like to compliment you on it. Thebanners you show support good causes (or at least, all the ones I'veseen do...), and where I'm from we call that commendable. Also, thanksfor the Katrina Marx bit (what I miss by not living in Canada). Peace,

Dave

As you can see, opinions on our banners are rather split. Thankfully, most everyone recongizes that we do need them, and isn't angry with us. Thanks for understanding. Now, as for the content, here's the deal. We are currently signed on with Flycast, a banner provider. For the first week, to get things all set up, we get the PSA banners you've been seeing. However, on Thursday of this week, we switch over to paying banners. What these will be, exactly, I haven't the faintest idea. At that point, we'll start seeing money for the banners. After Thursday, it's important to click the banners, so GIA can keep going.

I wish we had the freedom to exercise more control over our banner items. But we're at an impasse here. We're not going to be sporting porn banners, but beyond that, I can't make any promises. We'll have to see what Flycast gives us.

SARU!

SARU! GET YOU!

These simple words (MONKEY! GET YOU!) mean so much to me. The capture of monkeys. Lightsabers and energy nets. Wackiness rarely seen this side of Parappa. The twisted sense of humour all gamers seem to share. This game, I'm sure, will do wonders for our community. We'll all sit at our PSXs, and we'll catch monkeys. The joy brought by this simple action will unite us, it will bring together those from all reaches of gaming. "Hardcore" gamers. Strict genre gamers. RPGers. All will rejoice. This, I know.

Tseng Orabatous, Vampire Hunter and the penultimate Wild Arms fan.

SARU! GET YOU!

Prior to being introduced to Irritating Stick, I'd never have believed this game actually exists. As it stands, it sounds worryingly like a game that really could exist. And then, a little voice told me something important, and made a bloody obvious connection for me. The above game's US title is Ape Escape. It's a 3D platform game which is controlled by a pair of analog pads (only). AV and Glick insists that it's the coolest thing ever. I'm dubious.

Love the Japanese title, though.

Big Gay Al

Big Al? I thought you hated being called "Al"? Hmm, right after a norelevance to videogames connection to a homosexual ruling, is thissupposed to be an allusion to the South Park episode "Big GAY Al"?

Are you trying to say something? Don't worry, were open minded!

- MistaSopz

Well, it's sort of a mix. See, I tossed in the nickname Big Al as a injoke reference to South Park's Big Gay Al, figuring it would play amusingly right after the news bit about gay spouses in Canada. I wasn't coming out. It was a joke.

In a related aside, Tasha, who works at the movie theatre with me, has taken to calling me Big Al, to her endless amusement. The sentiment is so deeply sarcastic that I have to admire it.

Slow season

Is it just me, or have we over the past few months been experiencing a "dry season" in RPG releases? I mean, honestly, has ANYTHING worth mentioning been released since Zelda 64 (which, in itself, is just barely worth mentioning)? Of course, we can wait one more week for Lunar to finally come out, after which we'll get stuff like Grandia, Final Fantasy 8, Star Ocean 2, Jade Cocoon, Suikoden 2, and (the ultimate) Thousand Arms, all within less than 2 months of each other. Why exactly has nothing cool been released since practically November? And how come everything cool is coming out right when summer starts? Is it because of post-Christmas marketing cutback politics, or what?

-Capheine

Yeah, things have been fairly dry. Some of it is to be expected. As you say, after Christmas, sales on video games plummet. The time to release games are when kids have the most time and money, and that's summer, and fall, leading into the holiday season. Games for younger players get early summer releases, so the parents can buy them for the duration of the season, whereas games for the older crowd tend to get late summer/early fall releases, so the money from summer jobs can be... channeled. :)

All that aside, it's been a fairly dry season for RPGs of late. From memory, there was originally going to be a much more even spread of releases, but release delays have crammed most of them into May-through-October. So, the dry spell is half planned, and half sheer circumstance and bad luck.

Fanfic ideas

But then I read the whole question about a fanfic section on the site.Well, how about if you had Tami or hired someone to write a fanfic(fairly large) and then set up a type of one or two-week timeline forpeople reply and continue the fanfic or end it. The best ones would beposted at the end of that interval and either it would continue with thewriter of the site or he/she would start a new one.

Of course, this has problems, as do you regulate how people can continueit or not and how do you decide what tangent the staff writer would takeif someone did (maybe the best one). Still, I'd enjoy a section likethat and I'd hope others would too, even I didn't write anything intoit.

What do you think about such an idea?

-Link, go beyond reality...and swim in a sea of your dreams, breathingin sweet surrender.

Upon hearing me state that fanfic was a possibility, but not a sure thing, a few people suggested ways to make it more readable. One person suggested allowing writers to create their own characters within game worlds, so there's less chance of having endless "Cloud revives Aeris" fanfics rolling in. Force originality. Another suggested having a fanfic message board. Another suggested that I quit Double Agent and write fanfic all the time instead, since I'm a better fiction writer than a columnist. And there was the above. We may find an interesting twist on fanfic yet.

Your idea sounds okay, though there's always the danger that all the writers on staff utterly suck. Which would kinda make things annoying, wouldn't it?

Me, I'm just polishing up my 7th Saga fanfic. If we do add fanfic to GIA, you bet your sweet bippy I'm gonna sneak it past Tami and post it up. Hee.

Lack of evidence, your honor

That Not the Momma guy who wrote in yesterday strikes me as.. silly. Notonly does he neglect to notice that no solid PS2 details were releasedbefore Dreamcast development began, while DC development was underway, oruntil after the DC was released. Nobody knew what Sony had in store, but ofcourse, it'd have to be impressive. Secondly, since when has Square becomethe only good developer out there? I doubt Sega would halt a system justbecause Square turned them down. If Square always turned everyone downbecause something better was in development, Square wouldn't be making gamesanymore. Something better is always being worked on, even though we don'thear about every little thing.

Anyway, the point of my letter is that thisguy has some seriously flawed logic. What if computer developers worked onthis principle? Computer technology is always getting better. If theystopped developing their current technology because someone else was doingsomething better, we'd probably be stuck on Apple IIs. We'd be trapped in aperpetual state of everyone cancelling projects because a better one wasunder way. Anyway, according to E3 goers, the early PS2 Gran Turismo demowas less than impressive, but we know it can do better.. then again, seeingShenmue, so can the DC. I personally own an import DC and am quite blownaway by what it can do, but yeah, somebody's always working on somethingbetter, and it would have been moronic for Sega to throw what they had away.Anyway, since I've already rambled on too long, I'll sum up the rest of mypotentially huge statements in one sentence. FFIX, if these drawings AREfrom FFIX, will make me soil every pair of boxers I own. That is all.

Mike Lisman

I think this letter will serve as an endpoint to the PSX2/Dolphin/Dreamcast debates in Double Agent for a little while. We've sort of reached an impasse here, since we don't actually have a release list for two of the three systems. We've got numbers and promises, but a game system's success or failure is built on games, not numbers. So until we see actual games, or futher announcements that relate to games, I'm calling a halt to these arguments. For now, let's wait and see what comes next in the system wars.

Sharing sharing sharing

Dear Big Al,

I've got a problem. It's a pain I wish to share and inflict upon theworld, really. Xenogear spoilers btw. I'm at the battle with Bladegash. The first one, atop the Yggdrasil. Here's what's happening...My gearsfly forward to delever well deserved damage and...Stop in front of theenemy. Five minutes can pass before the do the move. Then another fiveminutes of all the gears 'breathing heavily' before the enemy moves orbefore a menu pops up.

After all the hype I've heard about Xenogears, after having to wait fora memory card replacement for months, this happens. If I ever see theending of Xenogears, it'll mean Hell has frozen over. Though that mayhave already happened when Micheal Jackson...Ahem.

In Searing Agony,

~Ian P.

Ouch. Sounds like problems inside the PSX to me. Man, that sucks.

Closing Comments

Tomorrow, I post up a nice new Deep Thought by Tony Patino on the subject of Collective Mediocrity and gaming. There's also a nice, lengthy post about Sega that I'm unsure what to do with - I may just link to it, so those who are interested can read it, without it dominating the entire column, since it's really long, and there's little room to criticize it.

In other news, I had insistence that the Airship is the mascot of the FF series, appearing in all eight installments to date (true), whether moogles appear in FF8 (yes, though I'm blissfully unaware of in what capacity), and whether we just made up those FF9 drawings just to fool people (nope).
