Ack, gotta get to work, so let's get into this straight off. Plugs and play | Go to The Red Tech Music store for all sorts of video game related stuff that's really hard to get. You may remember that Chrono Trigger piano book that sold on eBay for a couple hundred bucks a couple months back.. he (Nathan Malory) has that at his store on a regular basis. Go check it out. The Red Tech Music store. I'm hoping Nathan and Amber give me a big cookie for this or somethin'. :-) -JaRRaL Oh, and go check out http://omnigear.net/ too. It's another cool one! |
Hoo-ah, that's a nice one, albeit currently messed up due to Nathan's getting a virus. Poor guy. Still, sounds like a winner to me. Thanks for the pointer, and if Nathan doesn't give you a cookie, I'll be glad to. Comedy, but not an RPG | Good call with Sam and Max for the Comic RPGs, although I wonder if it couldreally be considered an RPG (I've never read the actual guidelines on whatconstitutes an RPG) but I guess it could be. Sierra also came up with a couple of series of Comic games: Leisure SuitLarry and Space Quest. But again, are they really RPGs? Between the 2 series, there have to be more than 10 titles. Also, the King's Quest series created afew chuckles. And way back when Apple II's ruled the earth, there was a textbased Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy game. Wulfgang |
Okay, okay, you got me, Sam 'n Max Hit the Road isn't an RPG. It is, however, a... wait for it... adventure game! By my crack-induced standards, it qualifies as an adventure game, and is thus suitable for GIA discussion and coverage, assuming it's for a console. And if it isn't, I'll fricking well port it to PSX myself. Yaroooooooze! | Hey Agent - I have a quick question for you. What is a Yaroze? Kaxon |
A Yaroze is a special Playstation product. Essentially, it's a modified PSX (it recognizes all games without alteration), and a software package that allow would-be programmers to create their own PSX games. You have a limited amount of memory to do so with (you can't utilize the full CD), but it's an impressive piece of work nonetheless. The problem? Well, it's not easy to program a game, so novices need not apply. Second, it's expensive as all hell. There's more info at Mimsy's Yaroze Info Page. Note that Net Yaroze, the official Sony Yaroze organization, is closed for new member applicants. I'm not even sure if you can still buy a Yaroze at all. Anyone have confirmation either way? Puyo vs. Puzzle Fighters | Re: the (gameplay) differences between PuyoPuyo and Supper Puzzle Fighter2 Turbo PuyoPuyo: The pieces come in anywhere from four colors, to six or seven colors, depending on dificulty level. When two pieces of the same color touch(up-down, left-right) they "blob" together to form a link. Whenever fouror more pieces of the same color become connected, they disapear. Clearingpieces causes grey Puyos to drop on the opponents side. Grey puyos staygrey forever, and can only be removed by causing a colored piece next toit to disappear. Puzzle Fighter: The pieces come in four colors. When two pieces of the same color touchthey merge into a rectangular block. Same color pieces will continue tomerge as long as they can form a rectangular shape. Occasionally colored"break crystals" will also be dropped, and will destroy all blocks of thatcolor that it is touching when it lands, and all those of that color thatare touching the blocks it destroys, and so on in a chain reaction.Clearing pieces causes coplored counter blocks to be dropped on theopponent (in a pattern depending on what character you're playing) Counterpieces start between 3 and 5, and go down one each time a pieces isdropped on that side. When they reach zero, they turn to a block of thatcolor, until that time, they can be destroyed by destroying normal blocksnext to them. Occasionaly a diamond will drop, which will destroy allpieces of the color it lands on. Differences: Since PuyoPuyo pieces disapear as soon as four are connected, it is harderto make large numbers disapear in a single chunk. However because no breakpieces are needed to destroy groups, combos are much easier. In puzzle fighter you can wait for the counter pieces to revert to coloredpieces and (depending on the drop pattern) use them against youropponent. In puyopuyo you have to dig through the grey pieces to reachyour own pieces before you can counter-attack, although grey pieces can beusefull in setting up a combo to be released later if you plan well. Also in PuyoPuyo links can be broken after they are formed if pieces areremoved from underneath part of the group. In puzzle fighter, once largercrystals are formed they remain merged (until destroyed with a break pieceof course.) Wow, that came out longer than intended. In fact, probably longer thanyou're willing to post. Oh well, another one bites the dust =) -Geoff Finger |
Whoa. Good stuff, Geoff. I am muy impressed, and thank you for the very helpful information. I don't suppose you'd like to write up a Puyo Puyo Vault for GIA, would you? :) Words and style | A question (or two or three), Mr. Double Agent: Why are the "Eyes on Me" lyrics in English? Furthermore, why are thetitle-screen texts for FFVIII, LoMana, etc. also in English? The Man Who Wasn't There |
For reasons I can't explain, the Japanese seem to be really fascinated with English words and phrases. Very often, they pop up in Japanese pop culture, more for the sound of it than anything. Also, due to the heavy presence of American media, it's handy for the Japanese to know and understand a little English. But mostly, they seem to use English for style. It looks cooler to them, I guess. More soundtrack hunter tips | You're slightly inaccurate on two counts. First, it's somethingof an understatement to say that a Final Fantasy Piano Collection willcost you upwards of forty dollars on eBay. I have tried diligently topurchase one of these babies, and I've always been thwarted by their pricetags upwards of two hundred dollars. (Which will now be made even worseby your broadcasting of this knowledge to the world--damn you, DoubleAgent, and your information-sharing ways!) As for the Symphonic Suite, I personally had a hell of a timefinding it a few years ago. However, if The Place (www.the-place.com) can be trusted, they've got some in stock listed on their order page.Plus, any copies they did have would be genuine, as The Place doesn't dealin SonMay CDs. Hope this information helps FF soundtrack hunters. |
Thanks for the pointers, and sorry about clueing people in to the wonder that is eBay. Remember, kids, you didn't hear it from me. :)
Closing comments Okay, keeping this brief, since I need to get to work now. Drew's filling in for the next two days, as usual, so play nice while I'm gone. Also note that, to my knowledge, he doesn't hold any policies about what will or will not be published in DA, so all of you people jonesing to discuss Colombine some more can send letters about as much to him. I still feel that it's really questionably on-topic, and it's time for this forum to move on. At least one person, the mother of one of the victims (who will remain anonymous, at her request), agrees with my decision in this matter, and thanked me for it. That letter is the most humbling, affecting letter I've ever received. I stand by my decision. See you on Monday. - Allan Milligan | | | |
