Double Agent

Day 3 of being back on the job as letters man. Even though it couldbe Day 4, or maybe even Day 5... you just lose track of time when you'rehaving so much fun and getting so little sleep!

Speaking of sleep, I bet Allan isn't sleeping well, because I'm surehe misses each and every one of you. YOU! You there, reading whilescratching that rash on your left arm! Allan misses you! And you!Sitting there in your red plaid boxers while twirling your hairaround your finger! Allan misses you too!

Nobuo owns it all

You know the ending song to LoZ:LttP? yeah that one. okay, now, is It NOT the same song that is played in the ff4, at the bridge scene with the text as cecil and kain leave the castle, and the same tune that is played in the end of nearly all of the final fantasy games? I believe so. So. Who owns this little tune?

THE S.o.S.

THE S.o.S, eh? What about the S.o.S. I met 3 months ago at McDonald's?Are you saying he's not real?

Anyway, I'll have to admit I haven't played the Legend of Zelda: A Linkto the Past (I had to sit and think for a few minutes to try to think ofwhat in the world that abbreviation was), but I've never noticed any sortof similarity between that and the FF main theme (not the official title, but that's what I call it anyway). As far as I know, Nobuo created andowns the song.

Pokéoops?

Hi AK!

You said you despised Nintendo's Pokemon marketing strategy, when youdon't seem to know what it really is. Nintendo isn't trying to force you tobuy multiple versions of Pokemon. The multiple versions are there to forceyou trade with other players (and create "Pokemon Friendships" as they werecalled in one episode of the cartoon. ['Battle on the St Anne']).

If you had both versions of Pokemon, you would also need two Game Boys, because that's the only way to trade Pokemon from one cart to the other. Ifyou just had one Game Boy and both versions (with all the Pokemon you canget on each), you might as well only have one copy, since you couldn't getthe Pokemon from one to the other, and thus couldn't fill up the Pokedex(the Pokedex keeps track of how many Pokemon you've seen and captured).

So buying both versions isn't really worth it unless you have two GameBoys, and the time to invest in both copies.

Well, this goes to show that I'm the furthest thing from a Pokéauthority, because I was not aware of this. I thought I had overheard some kids saythey wanted a color than what they had, but either they were confused, orI just made the whole thing up. Ooops. I guess I'll be eating some crow.

But, of course, there's always the other end of the spectrum...

He's Kaufman, I'm Kaufmann. And he's much cooler and funnier.

Just curious,You share a name with one famous comidian (sp?) who is the subject of an REMsong. Your fascination with REM is common knowledge (amongst those five men inbicycle shorts). Are these two facts related? Is your name an alias, createdby a need to be worshipped by your idols, or were you originally drawn to REMin the first place in an amazed stupor, excalaiming: "Yeah, Yeah,Yiiipiiieee!!!!, they're singing my name on MTV!!! My life begins today! CallGod. I'm checking in."Or is this just another unpredictable plot twist in the RPG of life (whichsells for $29.95 at Wal-Mart).And if you reply with something like "~scratch~scratch~ REM has a song aboutAndy Kaufman?" I will stab you.Repeatedly.

Chris [Oh my God, I really am utterly obbsessed with paranthases and cowsutters] Alfano.

p.s. you are wrong. Drakken is by far worse than 7th saga. When Drakken 2 wasannounced, I developed a rash.

First off, Chris, I hope that rash has cleared up. Nothing like a nastyrash to keep the women away.

And now, for the viewing pleasure of both of you out there that care, the history of REM and I:

As a sophomore or junior in high school (spring of 1995 or 1996), afriend of mine, Jeremy Hays (you're not reading this, but hi Jeremy!)told me about this song that had my name in it, by a pretty cool bandnamed R.E.M. I was skeptical, but during the past couple of years severalpeople had come up to me and informed me of a song with my name in it.Reluctantly, while a passenger in Jeremy's blue Buick (affectionatelycalled the Haysmobile... aah, the memories), I agreed to listen to thesong. I was instantly taken aback by how pleasantly upbeat and gleefulthe song was while maintaining a sense of sobriety. I was hooked.

The next day, I went to Best Buy and bought Automatic for the People.I adored the album, and bought another, Eponymous, because it hadIt's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine). I loved ittoo, and the rest is history.

A clarification from someone you might know

last paragraph:

Poledouris Scores Zelda Commercials

It's less of a news item than a "did you know", but Zelda fans impressed by themusic in the game's TV commercials might note that it was created by filmcomposer Basil Poledouris especially for the ads. Although the music is notpresent in the game itself due to cartridge limitations, similar work can befound in Poledouris's motion picture score to Conan the Barbarian.

Thank you very much AV!

Clarification from someone else, yet he's just as cool a person I betchar

If you head over to the the Crave website (the address escapes me) they havea game called Milo's Astro Lanes listed as being made for the N64. Nowyesterday you said that Crave didn't have any games for the N64. You know whatthat means. I'm right, you're wrong. Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah. Maybe. Crave'swebsite looks like it hasn't been updated in a loooong time (they're mostrecent news story is like from May last year) and I can only hope they ditchedthat game.

Milo's Astro Lanes... now there's a surefire hit if I ever saw one...

Giant monsters

Although Matt Blackie has some compelling arguments when he makes theclaim that giant monsters would collapse under their own weight, he's notcompletely right. The basic argument goes that if you double something(such as a cube)'s size, the volume of the object increases cubically andbecomes eight times greater, while the cross sectional area is onlysquared, and becomes four times greater. Now this disparity is even morepronounced for larger magnifications, but that does not necessarily meanthat they are not possible. Take for example your common, ordinaryhousecat and compare it to a lion. Just because the lion is four to sixtimes bigger than the cat doesn't mean that it's a lumbering giant andutterly helpless. To the contrary, lions, leopards, and their kind arerather damn fierce adn deadly. And don't even talk about Cheetahs.(Anyone have a housecat that can run over 100 mph?)

Yet, there is a size difference and the mathematical ratios mentioned arevalid, which makes for a bit of a problem. The solution? Greater muscularstrength. If you'll look carefully, the larger cats have thicker legmuscles than their tabbycat cousins. If you look carefully, the legmuscles on those Behemoths are immense, and boy do I mean immense. Forperspective's sake, try comparing their size to that of your ordinary human.

There are two other points that must be factored in. 1: We're talkingabout worlds that have magic, folks. How closely do you expect them tostick to physics? and 2: It's a frigging video game. If they wantthousands of foot tall giants to exist, then they're damn well going toexist, so stop whining about it and cope.

Secret Asian Man

Secret Aaaaaaasian Man! (hums the little ditty) Long time no talk, bud! Hope all is going wellin your corner of the world. Your response is well thought out, too well ifyou ask me. It worries me...

Secret of Evermore:

Eight people emailed me saying they liked Secret of Evermore. Now, let's see...there are approximately 10 million RPG fans in the world, and since about 95%of them are on the Internet, and 90% of them visit the GIA, and 100% of THEMreads this column... OK, by my estimation, 8 out of every 8.55 million (orapproximately 1 out of every million) RPG fans liked Secret of Evermore.

And, of course, 97% of the people who quote statistics make them all up.
