Double Agent

Yes, I'm AndrewK, and I'm still here. You can't get rid of me by sending letters! In fact, I like letters! More letters! MORE LETTERS!

For those of you looking for Allan's wit and wisdom, you'll have to check the archives for the next few days, as he's on vacation.

But as long as I'm here, I think I'll give an update on my life: I still don't have one. So send more letters!

Look out Shaq

My statement about liking the 7th Saga yesterday was unfairly (IMHO)maligned and I'm hear to drag the rant into a nostalgia filled monologueabout The Good Old Days(tm).

7th saga was better than some. Shall I mention such unspeakablemistakes as Ghost Lion (which I own and even managed to beat severalyears ago)? OK, so probably nobody has ever heard of it but 7th sagawas MUCH better than that.

I've played the old and oldish games, I've even beat most of them. Theywere awesome for their time. Does anybody remember Swords andSerpants(NES)? what about Inido(SNES)? One thing that I will say isthat they at least had real wizards.

Now, I'm not saying they were _good_ games but in their day they weregold. Heck, I even grabbed most of the "Adventure" games with RPG-ishelements.

Bring the Wizards Back!

Trey

Saying that 7th Saga is better than some games isn't saying a whole lot.I could say that I'm a better basketball player than your average 7 yearold, but that doesn't mean I'm ready for the NBA.

7th Saga had redeeming qualities, I'm sure... such as challenge. Fun,however, wasn't one of those qualities, if you ask me. Sure, it's oldschool... but old doesn't necessarily mean better. At the time, was itgreat? I'd say no... a bad RPG isn't more fun than a good fighter, if youask me. Bad RPGs are like reading a boring book, they just go on and onand on...

But really, who cares about games. NBA, here I come!

Hollywood, also take note

Hey AK, ever consider putting up a link to that old "Adventures of AK andAV", you know, the one where you get brain warped and AV gets the mindcontrol device turned on him, then plays Super Mario Cart? That was somefunny stuff right there. You rock AK!! YEAH!!!

Thanks for telling me I rock, I love to hear those magical words! *doesa funky little groovy dance* All I ask out of you all is not to call mesexypants...

AV and I (and our bud Quinn) had a great time making that skit, and I'm gladat least a few people enjoyed viewing our acting skills!

My favorite anecdote from that is an email we got afterwards, which I thinkvery plainly summed up the thoughts of our readers across the globe:

"Why did you show me that weird story??"

Ah well, can't please them all. If you haven't seen it yet, though, check it out. I dare you! Just keepin mind it's been more than 2 years since we did that skit.We were boys then. Now we are men. Or something. Mommy, I'm outclean socks!!

The red, blue, yellow, green, and gold scare...

Wow, you're doing the letters? *feels like Simba's just reunited with Nala from the Lion King, can you feel the love...erm...*

Anyway, we know Milligan's and Vestal's standpoint, how about yours?

Pikachu: Cute or communist plot?

~~roric

Communist plot. Duh.

<RANT>I think Nintendo's Pokémon strategy is despicable. Making devoted fansbuy blue, red, gold, and other colors which I can't think of just to geta few more monsters is crap. It's taking advantage of the consumer to makea few extra bucks. They might as well send out mail saying you've won$1000000 if you buy a magazine subscription.</RANT>

The quirks of time

You know what? No matter how long an RPG is, from Parasite Eve (12 hrs or so)to Xenogears (60 hrs) NONE of them are as long as 1st period Math class.

-Cham

Ah ha! Finally a statement about game length that we can all agree with.Way to go Cham!

Xenogears ending discussion (Spoilers)

Here's a question for you:

What's with the "Episode V" thingie after the end cinema? Is that referring to the fifth "reincarnation" of Fei (i.e. survives the Eldridge crash, Abel, Lacan, Kim, and Fei)? Or is this some kinda Star Wars thing and there's gonna be 4 more Xeno games? How cool would that be?

OK, so that was multiple questions. Sorry.

Thanks,
Renmazuo

I'll forgive you this time for multiple questions, Renmazuo, but don'tlet it happen again! Anyway, I haven't won Xenogears (who has time toplay video games? Wah.), but I asked Fritz, the resident GIA Xenogearsexpert, and he said that he believes it's about Fei's different reincarnations. He did say that he wouldn't be surprised if therewas a prequel, despite the fact that at this time there's been no wordfrom Square about such a prequel.

Americans do have skill, I think

I have a question. Why the hell can't Americans make good console RPGs? Imean, we make good RPGs for the computer (I love Baldur's Gate) but...

Let's see. Secret of Evermore. Uses the same engine as the hit Secret ofMana. Should be good. Except Squaresoft of America shoots it all to hell. 2characters? The alchemy was so useless, the spells you wanted were soexpensive. The plot sucked, even for an action-rpg.

You spent hours doing pointless crap (Let's trade 3 bead for a chicken, andsell it to the guru for a bursh of that delicious sage! Now all we need isthe crystal from the meteor, and some coal in the super-hard hell mine, and wecan cast cure on my dog! ) I especially hated the stupid American jokes.("This is like from Mars need Lumberjacks!") This should have been a hit; notit's a point of ridicule.

And what about Shadow Madness? I played the demo. The battle engine isclunky, and the graphics look bland. I hope that this is just an early demo, and the game will be improved, cuz right now it's just above crap.

What are your thoughts?

-Legion007, John Doe No. 6

Should I call you John or Mr. Doe? Anyway, I think it's an interesting point,if twisted. A better question would be, "Why aren't there more Americanmade RPGs?" Basing Americans as a failure in console RPG making based onone game is quite hasty.

Keep in mind that Parasite Eve was American made. It wasn't by anymeans Square's finest work, but it was very solid.

I believe that Secret of Evermore was a good concept that was badlyexecuted. I think a bit more work on the genre could have led to success,

Also, Shadow Madness has had some very nice things said about it. While no,it's not perfect, I think it will be a solid debut RPG from Crave, andcould start a wave of American-made RPGs.

I had to give up blonde jokes when I bleached my hair...

Agent-

Hey, I have a rather dumb question. Do you have any idea of how topronounce "Rinoa"? Is it sounded like the Japanese syllables as"Ree-noh-ah" or is it more like "Rye-noh-uh"(rye as in the grain-typethingy, well, how it sounds) I just don't want to pronounce it wrong andthen feel really stupid. Hm. . .typical thing coming from a blonde. Yeah, Iam a blonde girl who loves video games. I hope you can help me with myquestion, but if not, hey, fine with me. I'll just make up my own way tosay Rinoa. I've been using the latter, but no one in my school knows whothe heck she is anyways. I hate my life. My school is Square deprived.Well, ja ne.

~*Kate, also know on chats as Quistis*~

Oooh! Oooh! A female writing in! How's it going Kate?! Are you free this Fridaynight??

Anyway, Mr. Andrew Vestal, our resident... Vestal... says that it's pronouncedREE-noa. So.

On a vaguely related note, I've met three other big FF fans here on campus...not a bad number.
