Gwah. I am cursed. Cursed like someone who just killed their mother and ate her flesh afterwards, then picked their teeth using a toothpick they stole from a priest. Every time I start doing this column, every time I tell myself (and you readers) that this time for sure, no excuses, there will be daily updates, something goes wrong. I'm also cursed when it comes to getting myself a copy of Magic Knights Rayearth (grumble grumble snark grumble), but that's another story entirely. Anyhow, to make up for my lack of updates, I have been working on other things. Secret Things. And, amazingly, some of them are even genuinely informative. Impressive, neh? :) For now, though, I'll answer some letters that've backed up over the weekend... No One Can Stop Mr. Hammer! | Hey, bro, how's it going? I'm Hammer, the world-famous retailer of Gearparts, whoaccompanied the mighty Fei and his friends on their epic journey... and theycouldn'thave done without me! Anyway, bro, I think your column is great, and I'mhonoredto be writing a letter to such a talented letter-answering bro such asyourself. But I could use some help, bro. I've got this great game idea, but nobody'sinterestedin publishing it. It's called No One Can Stop Mr. Hammer, and this game, youcontrol me. The basic idea is to set move me around and up sequences oftradingcards, then turn red and blow up, knocking all the trading cards down, toclearthe level. I've put a lot of time and effort into this game, bro, but nobodyseemsinterested... something about some copyright conflict or something? Bro, Iownall the rights to myself, the illustrious Hammer, so I'm not sure what theproblemis there. And, bro, if you need further proof of the quality of my game, I present toyou theFive Stages of Hammer Addiction: 1. Confusion ("Why the hell is he glowing red?") 2. Condescension ("Heh, heh. What a wimpy boss.") 3. Denial ("I can't believe he just blew up and killed my party!") 4. Addiction ("I'm only going to try to get that Trading Card one more time-andthis time I mean it. DO YOU HEAR ME HAMMER?!?! ONLY ONE MORE!!!") 5. Acceptance ("Bro.") I could really use some help in this matter, bro, so any advice from a wiseDouble Agent like yourself would be greatly appreciated. Regards,Hammer ****This message brought to you by the Partnership for a Drive-FreeSolaris**** |
I'd suggest taking the game to Wisdom Tree, and see if they'll publish it. Sure, it'll end up being called Nothing Can Help But Accept the Wisdom and Love of Jesus Christ Into Their Hearts, but the gameplay should remain intact, right? Whining and gnashing of teeth | Hey Allan, I love you letters and your column...but I regret to say that this isntquite a happy letter. What can I say? Im a Squaresoft fan. But , now a days, I feel my peers aresad and pathetic bums who have nothing better to do than whine. I ampersonally sick of complaining (please read on, this isnt an attack on youor anything, just my opinion, and a bit of help for some of you). Peoplepick out the most stupid obscure things to insult. Do you notice thatpeople around here seem to think ol' Vick and crew at WD are gods orsomething? Do you think that WD has ever had a perfect translation? No,they havent. No game is ever translating perfect, thats just a fact of lifepeople. Ill give 2 examples of this then get to my main purpose.....1)Squaresoft misspells one word in a game, all you here is "Die Square Die"from a bunch of lamers. Working Designs on has one mis spelling and we hear"Man, they're awesome! Out of the whole game they only misspelled oneword!!!!" 2) Back when Squaresoft used to change games before thye broughtthem here, people cried out " How dare they! I want the original! Theythink we're to stupid!!!!!" But did you know that WD changes every gamethey bring over? They lower enemy attack rates and everything that Squaredid, yet they're hailed for it. I never thought I would see the day whensuch a skin head mentallity would work its way into RPG's. *sign* oh well. Ok, Im done complaining, and Im really sorry, because I do love yourcolumn, and dont want to piss you off, but I jsut had to get my opinionvoiced ; ) The attached file is a txt file I wrote that explains Cloud'spast in FF7. I notice that usually when people complain about ff7 they saythe plot was confusing. So here is a nice long summary of what reallyhappened. If you post this and response is wanted, Ill write about thehistory of Sephiroth and Jenova, and the weapons and such. My text editor, sadly, bunched together a few words, but its all there. Thanks for anyhelp, and keep up the cool work. LockeCole3/Fei |
Okay, two thoughts. First of all, if you've never seen complaints about WD's translations, you haven't been looking terribly hard. They are regularly crucified, through professional and fan feedback alike, for the changes that they make, and have been since they started. They've been lambasted for every translation they've ever done, from Exile to Cosmic Fantasy II to Lunar EB to (especially) MKR. There's no company out there that's blasted more for the changes they make. Which makes sense, since WD actively seeks to do that. Square's changes to games in translation, on the other hand, are more widely seen (due to better sales), but also the result of rushing the product to market. WD changes things because they want to, Square changes them as an accident. The rush problem tends to creature obvious, stupid mistakes that could and would be caught and dealt with during basic playtesting, which is what infuriates most people. There's no excuse for the job report dialogue in FFT. It really wasn't hard to spot that it was bad and forced and lame, and should have been fixed. As for the Cloud summary, thanks, but the fact that you needed to send me one just illustrates a basic flaw in FF7: it's really, really unclear. Square's going for the cinematic approach, emphasizing storytelling in their games. Fine, okay, but storytelling is about *telling a story*, and a story that's told in such a way that many people don't understand key plot points is a badly told story. That's the first thing you learn as a writer: if your intended audience doesn't get what you're saying, you've done something wrong. You rewrite. It's your fault, not theirs. The same principle applies here. Central plotlines in RPGs should be understood by the end of the game, or the game hasn't been done right. A vote against fanfics | I have to send in a vote against fanfics. I absolutely hate them andsometimes begin to hate their writers solely by association (namely the peoplewho write anything involving Sephiroth). The fanfics tend to be poorly written, boring (that actually fits back underpoorly written), and the home of the creatively challenged. You can't reallyexpect much from someone writing about someone elses characters, but thepeople who write fanfics aren't just incapable of creating their owncharacters they also aren't even able to create original fanfics (I've seenthe same Sephiroth story over and over and over). Now this isn't always the case. I have seen a few very well written fanficsout there, but it just doesn't happen very often, and far to many of them arepure crap. Jonathan S. |
GIA will not put up a fanfic section unless we can have a solid way of maintaining quality control. Which, with fanfics, is really, really hard. 99% of everything is crap, and that's especially true with fanfiction, to be quite honest. And I speak from the perspective of someone that has read and written fanfic, so don't flame me for knocking what I haven't given a fair shake. The fact is that fanfic is a genre that, by definition, encourages unoriginality. You're taking someone else's creations and working with them, instead of going to the effort of creating a character and situation yourself, and this is something that encourages sloppy storytelling. You don't need to set characterization, mood, world or theme, because someone else already has done it for you. You're just moving around action figures, instead of building with Lego like normal writers do. And, of course, with very popular fanfic subjects like Star Trek, Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, FF7, et al., the sheer mass of fan material guarantees that if you come up with a super secret, original storyline, about a hundred other people did too, and already did it. So fanfics are either really unoriginal, or else they go so far afield in order to be original that it begs the question "what the hell does this have to do with the original series/game/whatever"? There are good fanfics out there. Lots of them. But there's even more crap out there, and GIA won't be stepping into that realm until we figure out a way to make sure what we post up will be the best there is. You guys deserve no less. Final Fantasy Stuff | Hey Allan, glad that you are back answering letters again. I have somequestions and comments to make. 1. In a recent news story about FF6 PSX screenshots coming out, you said thatthere is no word on a US translation, but rumors strongly suggest it. Whatsources do these rumors come from? Are they very reliable sources? I surehope it gets translated and if it does, I hope square's translators will dobetter than the garbage layed on us in 1994. 2. I played the FF8 demo, and I thought the dialogue was quite good. Whydidn't you like it? 3. I missed the cool FF8 movie everyone is talking about, and I can't findthe old story on your site. Where can I still get it? 4. Do you remember that on the day FF8 was announced back in May, Square repswere quoted as saying that it would take less time to translate for a USrelease than FF7 did (which took 6 months). Just 15 days later at E3, theyannounce that the release is late fall '99. Well, with the February 11Japanese release date to late fall '99 that is...what? 7 or 8 months? Whatgives? Squaresoft seems to like getting all our hopes up and smashing themless than a month later. I sure hope the in the extra translation time, theydon't try to do anything stupid like "adapt it for American audiences." Yousaw what happened when they did that to FF4. 5. What is your favorite non-RPG, puzzle, or strategy game? I think althoughthe "brainy" games are cool, sometimes nothing can beat a good few hours ofMGS, Tekken 3, or RE2. - FF5Rulz |
1. Sources for rumors of FF6 PSX being translated mostly come from thin air, basically. The standard stock of "inside sources" that also reported on Aeris being revived as a secret in FF7. Square has made no motions to translation FF6, or any other of the FF remakes for PSX, and even went so far as to post a question directly refuting it in their site FAQ. Don't hold your breath. 2. I liked it fine, actually. Did I say otherwise? Whoopsie... 3. It's in our FF8 media archives. Go to the Games section, then to FF8, Media, and it's the December 7th entry. There you go. 4. In my heart of hearts, I'm hoping Square will be using the extra time to make sure the translation is good on FF8. The first half of Xenogears showed much improvement in this area, and I hope FF8 gets the full treatment. When Namco's first RPG has a better translation than Square's tenth, something's not right. I also suspect that sales may have something to do with the new release date: most of the big gun releases are release in late fall, usually November: Xenogears and Zelda 64 this year, for example. This gives them some time to build up momentum, but keeps them fresh and exciting for the all-important holiday season. 5. MGS, to my mind, counts as a "brainy" game, and had we launched GIA earlier, we would've done coverage of it in a heartbeat. Great stuff. Still, my all-time favourite dumb game is Super Dodgeball. Glorious. I prefer Soul Edge/Blade to Tekken, and think Resident Evil 1 and 2 are highly overrated. But that's me. I'm weird. Imperial parallels and Joseph Campbell | Allan, have you ever noticed how in Final Fantasy 6[3 america] and Final Fantasy 7 both use the names Biggs[6:Vicks] and Wedge? Another thing... Pieces of the plot in FF6 and FF7 match in with George Lucas' multi-million dollar movie? The Returners/Avalanche:The Rebels?... Shinra/Empire:the Empire? A fellow Canadian, CaPtAiN_CaDaVeR |
Square are a bunch of Star Wars fanatics. There's the Biggs and Wedge thing. There's the "you're pretty small for a soldier" bit in FF3 US. There's a whole host of things. So they pay homage to their favourite movies by slipping in little references to it into their games. No biggie. As for the story parallels, well, the rebellion vs. oppressive empire is a universal theme in stories (and history). Triumph of the right-minded minority over those that would stamp them down and all that. Read some Joseph Campbell - the Masks of God series and especially The Hero of a Thousand Faces to see how common and linked stories and mythology are throughout all human cultures. Actually, I think reading The Hero of a Thousand Faces should be required reading for all North American children over the age of twelve, but that's one of my personal crusades. Brilliant book, and Joseph Campbell (the author) served as a consultant on the plotting of the Star Wars trilogy, which followed the Hero's Journey archetype set out in the book. So go read that book. Luke Skywalker would want you to. Cinematics | Dear GIA , Hi , I love your site! I have a few comments about theupcoming FF game. I was a big fan of the FF series. But now , I have simplylost intrest in them. I still LOVE FFT and FF3 , but as for FF7 and theupcoming FF8 , I just don't like them! What happened to the general , basicFF games? FF8 and FF7 are just too futureistic!! I mean , look at FFT , its inthe past , and its all basic weapons. And must of the time your fighting. Ithas a great storyline! And graphics are great! I like things in the past , notin the future. I'm also getting sick of how square tries to make games likemovies. ITS TOO MANY CINEMA SCENES!! A game is alot different from a movie! If this letter does not get posted , ( I hope it does ) well at least you'llknow what I'm trying to get too. Just to let you know you will probably getmore letters from me about this same subject. I'm speaking out against Rpgsmixed with movies. Anyone who would like to contact me about this subject e-mail me at RURPG64@AOL.COM. Subject , Comments on you're FF column. Thank youfor understanding. Sincerely, Bladefall |
I find it interesting that the Final Fantasy series, as of FF7 onwards, is lambasted for having movies "ruining" the gameplay, whereas respected series like Ys, Lunar, and Tengai Makyo have used anime cutscenes to enhance mood and storytelling for years. I also fail to see how watching a well-done CGI cutscene to put across a plot point is fundamentally worse than having an equally non-interactive cutscene using the game engine. I mean, play through FF6 again. You stop all the time for cutscenes where, heavens to Forbush, your control if limited to scrolling the dialogue forward. So, why are cutscenes in RPGs Good, regardless of quality or quantity (how many complaint letters and threads about an RPG having too many in-game dialogue scenes have YOU read recently), and FMV used for the same purpose Bad? And why aren't anime cutscenes reviled as much as the FF7 and Parasite Eve CGI ones are? As for the futuristic bent part, well, different strokes for different folks. Here at GIA, Andrew K. is a big booster for medieval stylings for RPGs, whereas I actively prefer futuristic ones. Release schedule for '99 | In the prievew for Chochobo's Mysterious Dungeon 2, Andrew Vestalmentions that there are seven Square EA games scheduled for release for'99. Are there any concrete titles on that list? (Other thanFF8-duh). Thanks for your time. Derek Harburg |
FF8 is concrete, as you say. Assuming it's released in a timely fashion, I believe that SaGa Frontier 2 is a shoo-in. I've heard rumblings that Ehrgeiz will likely a US release, depending on its performance in arcades. Beyond that, we just have a number, but no titles. Secret Files and Origins | 'Chron wonders where the title song from Final Fantasy: Love Will Grow comes from (it's an original composition for the album, and a good one I might add), Jared asks if there is really a ninth Secret of Mana elemental, as explained at http://www.attcanada.net/~mrpopo/solar, (there isn't, though I give it points for sheer depth of bullshit), Robindra Deb asks which is more popular in Japan, Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest (DQ by a good margin - there's a bloody DQ opera in Japan, for chrissakes), Morbid Walker wants everyone to know that Kain from FF4 was a lefty, and a few people were unclear that *I* make up the red-lettered headers for each letter. They aren't the original author's Subject lines, generally. Pardon the confusion. |
I'm knocking on wood and wishing you well as I tell you I'll see you all tomorrow. 'Til then, have a good one. - Allan Milligan the Cursed | | | |
