Artist's Commentary
“Of less importance since it opened on the countryside and not on a busy road, this door had to suffer especially during the religion Wars. Indeed, at the time of alarms in 1605, it was decided to post guards there, unusual thing at this place. The events of 1580 had shown that it was “a door of consequence” because Sully had arrived, with its troops, to force the entry and to penetrate it in the city. It is the only door which remains in its original state. Of a Romance construction, the enclosure is undoubtedly contemporary...”
