To do this, a lot of information had to be obtained and organized into what you see below. Massive amounts of time were spent ensuring that you need look no further than this FAQ for information on Phantasy Star. If you would like to use this FAQ on your own non- commercial webpage, please email me for permission. It's highly doubtful that I'll refuse your request, but this is just one of those legal formalities that I'd prefer be done. Taking any portion of this guide without my permission, however, is considered plagiarism, and I'm sure you've heard enough about that in English class. It is theft, plain and simple. I didn't put so much work into this thing for jerks to rip it off. But enough of that... on with the FAQ! -=-=-=-= CONTENTS -=-=-=-= I. UPDATES II. INTRODUCTION A. What is Phantasy Star? B. UPDATES -=-=-=-=-= 02.20.01 - v1.5 - Added the Magic tables (VI.A and VI.B) as well as experience tables for three of the game's four characters (Section VII). The levels in these tables are somewhat low, as I am replaying the game from the beginning to collect this data. 09.07.00 - v1.4 - Wow, it's been a while. A while as in, say, seven months. But I'm back on track with this killer FAQ (I rhymed!) and plan on putting in a lot more work in the future. This time we've got a list of all the spells (section VI), an expanded Beastiary, as well as two new sections of the walkthrough (IV.C.2 and IV.C.3) to take you up to Naula Cave. Eat. 02.07.00 - v1.3 - I took a day off from school to supply you with the new Equipment section. Oh, and I was sick. Booyaka! 02.06.00 - v1.2 - Wondering how to recruit that cat-like thing with the long ears and the obligatory axe-wielding musclehead? Wonder no more, friends. 02.05.00 - v1.1 - Added the walkthrough for Camineet, as well as the surrounding areas. And hey, this thing might even be online today. Woo. 02.02.00 - v1.0 - Started the damn thing. Joy. Don't expect to get too far into the game with this FAQ... Despite its name, it only covers the basics of the game... so far. Just wait a while, I'll have the whole thing done someday. Don't say I never gave anything to humanity. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= II. INTRODUCTION -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= +++++++++++++++++++++++++ A. What is Phantasy Star? +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Well, let's start from the beginning... Many moons ago, before they decided to employ ill-conceived advertisements and general numbskullery, Sega had a little 8-bit machine known as the Master System. It was almost immediately overshadowed by the NES, released in very close proximity. In a sudden burst of creativity, Sega produced a handful of good games for their little machine, including Phantasy Star, Miracle Warriors, and Safari Hunt (if anyone out there has a SMS light gun collecting dust... contact me. NOW). Unfortunately, only the few people who purchased both the SMS and titles like PS and MW had the opportunity to experience these great games and get a peek at the evolving videogame genre that would eventually deprive losers everywhere of even more social time. Thus, my RPG fandom was born. Mind you, I only favor this particular title out of a longing for days past. I played it avidly in 1990-1 and then forgot about it until now. I tried to find a decent FAQ for the game, but no go... Even the lovable Phantasy-Star.net fell short in certain areas... Thus, my calling. +++++++++++++++++++++++ B. Where can I find it? +++++++++++++++++++++++ I probably don't need to mention that this game isn't in production anymore. You can track down a copy on eBay, if you're willing to pay $30-$50 for it. A pretty good deal, considering that's about half of what it was originally sold for. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ C. How this FAQ is organized ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The outline displayed in the Contents appear as they do in the game. I have written this guide in chronological order, without a special "secrets" section (there are hardly any). The outline was written according to which planets the events take place on. Planet-hopping is common in PS, so there are a lot of subsections. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- III. PLAY MECHANICS -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ++++++++ A. Menus ++++++++ *** 1. Non-battle *** From just about any screen in the game, pressing button 1 or 2 will call up the main menu. And looky-do, it's here for you. ____ |STAS| - See the stats and experience points of a character. |MAGC| - Cast any curative magic spell. |ITEM| - Manage items in your inventory |SRCH| - Examine the immediate area (VERY rarely used) |SAVE| - Record your progress, anytime. Oh yeah, baby. ---- These commands are self-explanatory, although the ITEM menu has a few submenus. When an item is selected with button 2, three new commands pop up. The USE command will activate the selected item. The EQP command is used only for weapons and armor, and also asks which character to equip the selected piece on. Finally, the handy DRP command lets you ditch excess baggage such as the plethora of Flashes that accumulate in your inventory after just a few bouts with Vampires and Sphinxes. The only time you'll want to use the SRCH command is when you accidentally decide to turn down opening an enemy's treasure chest. If you do turn it down, the game just leaves in front of you. If you still want it, just use the SRCH command to bring up the question again. If you don't want it, hit button 1 to go along your merry way. *** 2. Battle *** ____ |ATTK| - Attack a random enemy. |MAGC| - Cast a battle spell. |ITEM| - Use an item to heal, escape, or talk to the enemy. |TALK| - Talk to the one or two enemies in the game that look humanoid. |RUN | - An RPG classic. Lets you turn tail and moves you back one step. ---- These commands are also quite simple... The only thing worth mentioning is that the TALK command is extremely rarely used. In short, you can count the times you'll use it in the game on one hand, foot, or tentacle. Besides, there are items and spells available that can allow you to converse with a slightly wider array of enemies... Although you'd have to be beyond bored to actually find interest in their squablings. Some of them offer semi-interesting gameplay tips, but... uh... so what? You've got this mighty FAQ. +++++++++++++++++++ B. Finding your way +++++++++++++++++++ *** 1. Navigation *** Navigation in the world of Phantasy Star can be either simple or ridiculously difficult. The simple areas are the ones that allow you to control Alis and party via a simple standard 8/16-bit view, with all four members of the party all lined up. This is employed only on the world map and in towns. The second view, 1st person, is used in caves, dungeons, and towers. This can be confusing for several reasons... First of all, until you obtain the compass, you have no idea in which direction you're walking. Fortunately, I have provided maps for all of the caves, dungeons, and towers. Another major stumbling block in the world of the intrepid catacomb- lurker is the pitfall. These pitfalls are seemingly randomly placed, and can make certain areas absolutely hellish without a map. For your convenience, pitfalls and other traps are labeled on the maps. Other traps include trapped treasure chests, containing either a spear trap (damages a random party member) or exploding traps (damages the entire party). Locate them and avoid them like Pauley Shore. *** 2. How to use the maps *** In this FAQ, a map is included for each dungeon, along with the enemies and treasure located therein. Below is a brief key explaining the symbols used in these maps. __ __ = 1 step horizontally (east/west) | | = 1 step vertically (north/south) @ = normal door @d = dungeon door (requires Dungeon Key) @m = magic door (Requires Miracle Key or OPEN spell) *a-z = treasure/event #a-z = pitfall Xa-z = location after falling through pitfall E = entrance/exit (labeled if not apparent) U = stairs going up (with corresponding numbers if necessary) D = stairs going down ! = fight Upon entering a cave, dungeon, or tower (referred to hereafter simply as "dungeons"), you will be facing one of the cardinal directions. For those of you who may have failed the third grade, here's a quick review. N | W--*--E | S The compass is your best friend in Phantasy Star. After recruiting Odin, the compass is yours. By using it in a dungeon, you can see which direction you're currently facing, which can be extremely helpful if you've lost your way on the map. The compass will help you get right back on course. Note that not all dungeons start you out facing north; the maps in this FAQ appear as they would in the game. The compass rose above applies to every map I've made. One final comment: Because of the 1st person POV, mapping events in the dungeons was a bit of trouble. However, if you see this: ________ | __*a__] | | ...It means that you will see the event or chest that appears at *a when you have stepped on that square. In the game, however, it will appear that the event or chest is in *front* of you, one space ahead. Be aware that if something is marked on a square, you will have to deal with it on that space, not one ahead. ++++++++++ C. Battles ++++++++++ Phantasy Star was way ahead of its time as far as battles go. Enemies can not only fill up a sizable portion of the screen, but they even have attack animations! Good ones! Come on, at least pretend like you're excited. This was big stuff in '88! ATTACK ANIMATIONS! God, I'm still in shock. I tell ya, they gave me nightmares for quite a while. Yes, well. Anyway, battles... yeah... Random encounters occur VERY erratically in PS. Sometimes you'll be plagued by battles every other step, and sometimes you can traverse whole floors without encountering so much as a moth. This same unpredictability is also applied to the actual fighting, which can really piss off the player. I had a level 4 Alis take 1HP of damage from a Scorpion (HP12). At level 28, this same Alis, outfitted with the strongest armor in the game, took a surprising 12HP of damage from the same enemy. It's doubtful that PS has the monsters level up with your characters, seeing as how they retain the same HP maximums throughout. Ah well... Just depend on good old fashioned luck. When you encounter an enemy, the battle menu (explained in part A) will pop up, as well as the names and HP of your party members and the enemy. Phantasy Star may have the neato-keeno battle animations, but it only allows one enemy sprite onscreen. To signify multiple enemies, multiple rows of enemy HP will appear, all with the same number to start. Finally, and this is very unfortunate, choosing the ATTK command will force the character to hit a random enemy. This can be very troublesome when formulating a strategy, which is why most boss fights are actually quite simple. There is a special breed of weapons available, the guns, that allow ALL of the enemies to be hit for precisely the same amount of damage. The degree of damage varies from gun to gun, but they can be very useful sometimes. Guns are only usable by Odin. After you've sent your opponent back to whichever 80's horror film he or she came from, you will be treated to a treasure chest. The amount of meseta (the universal currency of the Algo Solar System) and experience that are earned can be found in the beastiary. Multiply these numbers by the number of enemies encountered to calculate your earned exp. and meseta. Also, beware of trapped chests; the game is brutal about booby-trapping chests dropped by enemies or found in dungeons. If you've already obtained the maximum 65535 meseta, simply choose not to open the chest. This isn't Who Wants to be a Millionaire, there's no possible way that taking this chance can earn you more money, only trouble. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- IV. THE WALKTHROUGH -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ++++++++ A. Palma ++++++++ *** 1. Camineet and Parolit *** After the riveting intro, Alis finds herself in front of her home, a sweet little yellow dome with one room. How cozy. Anyhow, the first thing you should do is wander up into that little cave to your right (the "warehouse") to fetch some cash and get a feel for the 1st person POV of the dungeons. --- a. Map: Warehouse --- _________________ [__*2______ __ | | | | | | | | | | | | | _________| | | | [__*1@______| E *1 - 50 mesetas *2 - Dugn. Key (after talking to old man in Eppi) Enemies - none This is a very straightforward dungeon. Don't worry about random encounters, this place is enemy-free. Just grab the 50 mesetas and return to the outside to gear up with your newfound dough. --- b. Handy-dandy items --- Once you've made it back outside, head on over to the Armory (shop on the far left of the trio of shops) and purchase a shiny new Leather Shield (DEF+3) for Alis. ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | Suelo's house | Full recovery | 0 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Lth. Nekise, a man who knew your brother Nero, will give you a Laconian Pot. Tres cool. He also tells you that the man named Odin resides in the port town of Scion. The pot and information won't come into play just yet, but it is important that you visit a woman called Suelo. Suelo lives in the yellow house just below yours. Without her, the game would be a bit too frustrating... She will heal your entire party for free during the game. Just walk in, and BAM! Instant health. You may return anytime you wish. Her method of restoration is much quicker and cheaper than having to heal everyone individually at the hospitals. Now that you're fit to fight, go out the east exit. We're gonna cause a ruckus. --- c. Outside The Wall --- Upon reaching the outside world, you will see two other towns and a big wall. Actually, the location in the upper left is a spaceport, accesible only after you've purchased a roadpass (done in the port town of Scion later). The lower area, Parolit, is a residential area like Camineet. You can find some strong weapons here, but nothing very affordable right now. If you like, head on in to check out the shops and speak with the residents. ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Irn. Here you can find Swarms (easy pickings) and Owl Bears (a wee bit tougher). This is a good place to level up if you're up for the challenge of the occasional Owl Bear, but if you want to fight a steady stream of Swarms, leave the enclosed area and fight outside of the wall. You may encounter a few Scorpions, but they're nothing to worry about. When in doubt, run. * Enemies in and near the wall * _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ ________ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|--------| | Swarm | 8 | 2 | 3 | None | No | | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | None | No | | Scorpion | 12 | 4 | 13 | None | No | | Maneater | 16 | 3 | 13 | None | No | | Owl Bear | 18 | 5 | 12 | None | No | | Deadtree | 23 | 4 | 21 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------- Other enemies in the area include Deadtrees to the west and Wingeyes to the north. These enemies aren't too tough and provide adequate exp. and meseta, but beware. It's a long hike out to their nests, and thanks to PS's unpredictale and erratic formulae, anything can go wrong. Wait till you've shot up a few levels before tackling them. It's also feasible to hunt the Maneaters to the south near Medusa's Cave, but you run the risk of encountering a stray Werebat or Skull-En, and the results would rival an episode of Full House in terms of ugliness. In fact, your best bet at this point would be to wail on the scorpions near the entrance to the wall. Assuming, of course, you've done some leveling up already with the Swarms. Your first job should be to level up and raise 75 mesetas for that Iron Sword in Parolit. Keep in mind that you can return to Camineet at any time for a free restoration by Suelo. As an RPGer, you don't need to be told this, but don't forget to save often. You'll really kick yourself if you earned 300 meseta from Scorpions and Owl Bears, only to fall prey to a measly Swarm. Packing a few Colas for emergencies isn't a bad idea, either. Just keep in mind that this is the slowest part of the game... It all speeds up once you're able to knock out Owl Bears in only a hit or two. *** 2. Scion and the "Secrets" *** --- a. Touring Scion --- Scion is a port town to the east of Camineet, a welcome sight to those accustomed to the mundanity of the residential areas within the wall. Looking for some armor? Scion's the place. ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Lth.Armr | 28 | | Armory | Lgt.Suit | 290 | | | Zir.Armr | 1000 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Flash | 20 | | Second-Hand Shop | Transfer | 48 | | | Secrets | 200 | -------------------------------------------------- The Light Suit is better than the Leather Armor that Alis started the game with, but nowhere near as good as the expensive Zirconium Armor. If you have an extreme excess of mesetas (500+) pick up a Light Suit. If not, don't worry, it can wait. Things really get kooky at the Second-Hand Shop. Secrets? Huh? 200 mesetas seems to be a bit much for secrets, don't you think? Even so, an item like this must be imperative to the game, and it is. If you can't afford them right now, head back outside and earn the necessary cash. --- b. Raising the cash --- At this point, you should be more than strong enough to take out groups of Owl Bears without a problem. Alis should have learned the Heal spell a short while ago, as well as the occasionally useful Bye spell. The next goal here will be to raise 300 mesetas to purchase the necessary legal accesories to let Alis play space-traveller. 200 of those mesetas will go towards "Secrets," while the other 100 will make them worthwhile. --- c. Haggling --- Any attempt to purchase the secrets from the disgruntled shopkeeper in Scion will result in the his refusal (If he's got them for sale, why won't he sell them?). When I was but a wee lad playing this game, I had no idea that persistence was necessary. I gave up and wandered around, not knowing what to do. I almost went insane from frustration... until my brother noticed the predicament and attempted to purchase the secrets again and again. On the third time, the shopkeeper gave in, and the Roadpass was mine. Take your newfound Roadpass and hike on over to either the west exit of Camineet or the north exit of Parolit and talk to the guards. Shazam! Entry to the Palma Spaceport is yours. Now listen up, because this is why you needed that extra 100 mesetas. *** 3. A Passport is a port tat is pass *** Ah, finally! Something new! At last Alis gets a chance to go planet-hopping, something that her and the gang will do a lot of over the course of the game. But what's this? A shop for acquiring a Passport? Better check it out. ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | First Food Shop | Cola | 10 | | | Burger | 40 | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | Passport shop | Passport | 100 | -------------------------------------------------- The woman in the Passport shop won't just hand the Passport over. You've got to undergo a rigorous testing session before that bad boy becomes yours. "You can file for a Passport here. Do you want a Passport?" ____ |>Yes| "Have you ever done |_No_| anything illegal?" ____ |>Yes| "That's not good. |_No_| You'll have to come back later." ____ | Yes| "Do you currently |>No_| have an illness?" ____ |>Yes| "That's not good. |_No_| You'll have to come back later." ____ | Yes| "The Passport fee |>No_| is 100 mesetas. Intergalactic Planetary --- Passport in hand, head left and speak with the guards. After being asked to show your passport, walk up to one of the big red ships and hop aboard; it's time pay a call on Motavia. -=-=-=-=-=-= B. Motavia I -=-=-=-=-=-= *** 1. No haggling necessary *** Remember the Laconian Pot that was given to you by that silly ol' Nekise? His donation is about to come in handy. Head north from the spaceport to the town of Paseo and stroll into the "shop" on the right. You'll meet an odd guy who trades you a cat-like creature for that crummy old pot of yours. Your new bud, Myau, also comes with a gift: a bottle of Alsulin that can turn the stoned (as in "turned to stone") Odin back to flesh and blood. Score! As for now, it would be wise to check out the other shops in Paseo... ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Sht. Pot | -------------------------------------------------- *** 2. Outfitting your new critter *** Some of the more astute FAQ-readers will notice the selling of Thick Fur in the armory. I'll give you three guesses as to who it's for... If you've got the cash, pick some up for your new pal, Myau. If you don't have sufficient funds, head back to Palma and raise the money. The Thick Fur ups Myau's defense by a whopping 30 points, and the little guy has very few sets of armor in the game. You really can't afford to miss it. * Enemies around Paseo and Motavia spaceport * _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ ________ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|--------| | Scorpion | 12 | 4 | 13 | None | No | | G.Scorpi | 20 | 5 | 11 | None | No | | Crawler | 40 | 9 | 30 | None | No | | Barbrian | 54 | 10 | 89 | Cola | No | | Shelfish | 62 | 16 | 46 | None | No | | Ant Lion | 66 | 8 | 7 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------- +++++++++++ C. See that little thing that looks like a nut with stairs in it? That is the cave of Medusa, and is surprisingly gorgon-free. --- a. Map: Medusa's Cave --- ____________ | ________*4] | | | | | | _ | | | | | |____________________|*1 | ___ _________ __ | | | | |___ | | | | | |___| _ |_____| | | | | ___ |_| _____ | | | | |___|_____| ____| | | | |_*3__] [__*2__| E *1 - 10 mesetas *2 - 20 mesetas *3 - Odin *4 - Compass (only after finding Odin) * Enemies in Medusa's Cave * _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ ________ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|--------| | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | None | No | | Gr.Slime | 18 | 4 | 8 | None | No | | Evildead | 30 | 14 | 8 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------- The first real cave of Phantasy Star is very straightforward and should only take a few minutes. When you find Odin, select the Alsulin from your ITEM menu and watch the drama unfold. Swing around the far corner, grab the compass, and hightail it back to Camineet for some R&R in Suelo's house. *** 2. The Dungeon Key *** Alis and co. are now in possession of the compass, and with it, a path to Eppi village. Make your way south from the wall and into the middle of the forest you see there. *Enemies in and around Eppi forest * _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ ________ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|--------| | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | None | No | | Were Bat | 50 | 11 | 63 | Flash | No | | Skull-En | 57 | 18 | 37 | None | No | ------------------------------------------------------------- Eppi village is located in the center, and besides having some juicy tidbits of information, it also has some good weapons and armor. ___________________ _______________ ______________ | Establishment | Wares | Price(s) | |-------------------|---------------|--------------| | | Irn. Axe | 64 | | Armory | NeedlGun | 400 | | | Brnz.Sld | 310 | -------------------------------------------------- If you leave Eppi with only one new item in your possession, make it the Needle Gun. This beast not only has an attack power nearly double that of the Iron Axe, but also hits all enemies. Pick one up for Odin. But the main reason for your trip to this backwater village is to obtain a clue to finding the Dungeon Key. Speak with the old man in the house with the gold dome. The "outskirts of Parolit" that he speaks of is the warehouse where you obtained your first 50 mesetas. Head back to Parolit and enter the warehouse. Instead of making that first left, continue straight and pick up the key in a chest at the dead end. You are now in possession of the the handy-dandy Dungeon Key. Locked doors mean nothing to you now, although magically-sealed doors will have to wait. *** 3. Mmm... cake... *** Meanwhile, back on Motavia, the governor of Paseo has a hankering for a sweetcake... what to do, what to do? You comb the depths of a dark, dank cave to find a shop, that's what. This is where the challenge of the game starts to pick up. Naula Cave is four levels deep and houses a few tough monsters. To pull this one off, it is strongly recommended that you purchase the following things. These are the bare minimum, and to ensure success it would be wise to go all out and buy the most expensive things for your party (excluding the Diamond Armor in Paseo, unless you're REALLY ambitious). - Light Suit for Alis (cost: 290, DEF+15; In Scion) - Thick Fur for Myau (cost: 630, DEF+30; In Paseo) - Iron Shield for Alis (cost: 520, DEF+15; In Parolit) - Zirconium Armor for Odin (cost: 1000, DEF+30; In Scion) On top of that, you'll need to bring an extra 1000 mesetas to the cave to pay for the cake itself. Add to that the cost of flashes, colas, and burgers, and this turns out to be quite an expensive little trip. The fastest way to accumulate this cash is to fight the Were-Bats that roam Eppi forest. One battle with four of the bats will yield 44 Exp. and 252 mesetas. Don't waste your time with the Fishmen that hang around by the beaches; They give the same amount of experience as Were-Bats, but not nearly as much money. On top of that, they're harder to kill. Pass. [Note - PSO fans will realize that the "Addicting Food" guild quest proposed by Trekka in the newest installment of the Phantasy Star series alludes to this very chore. PSO forces you to brave several layers of caves, each brimming with an online amount of monsters (even when playing by yourself offline) and nets you a measly 1500 mesetas for retrieving a strawberry-encrusted shortcake.] *Enemies around Naula Cave * _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | G.Scorpi | 20 | 5 | 11 | None | No | | Deadtree | 23 | 4 | 21 | None | No | | Fishman | 42 | 11 | 42 | None | No | | Tarantul | 50 | 10 | 51 | None | Yes | ------------------------------------------------------------ -=-=-=-=-=-= V. EQUIPMENT -=-=-=-=-=-= For an early RPG, Phantasy Star features a surprisingly large array of arms and armor. Below is a complete list of weapons, armor, and shields, followed by their attack strength or defense, as well as an asterisk to indicate which characters can use them. ++++++++++ A. MAGIC -=-=-=-=- Phantasy Star enables three of its four characters to use magic spells, probably because Odin becomes such a beast by himself anyway. As in most RPG's, magic means the difference between life and death in Phantasy Star. Read on to learn which spells do what, how much MP they cost, when they can be learned, and who can learn them. ++++++++ A. Field ++++++++ Magic designed for use in the field or in dungeons is described below. Note that Alis's FLY spell is rendered ineffective while inside a dungeon. _______ ____ ___________ ______ _________________________________ | Spell | MP | Used by | Lv. | Effect | |-------|----|-----------|------|---------------------------------| | HEAL | 2 | Alis | 4 | Heals 20 HP | | CURE | 6 | Myau,Noah | 6,1 | Heals 80 HP | | FLY | 8 | Alis | 16 | Warps to last church visited | | TRAP | 2 | Myau | 15 | Checks for and disarms traps | | EXIT | 4 | Myau,Noah | 17,6 | Warp out of dungeon | | OPEN | 4 | Noah | 17 | Open all kinds of doors | | RISE | 12 | Noah | 20 | Revive a character to full life | ----------------------------------------------------------------- +++++++++ B. Battle +++++++++ The amount of support magic in this game may outnumber the amount of offensive magic, but most of the supportive spells are kinda worthless; Spells like ROPE and WALL wear off too quickly to be of any use. Note that the (min 2) and (min 3) beside FIRE and WIND means that even if you're fighting only one enemy, those spells will hit that enemy a minimum of two or three times, respectively. For example, using FIRE during an encounter with one enemy will cause 20 damage. _______ ____ ____________ ______ ______________________________ | Spell | MP | Used by | Lv. | Effect | |-------|----|------------|------|------------------------------| | TERR | 4 | Myau | 9 | Lowers DEF of one monster | | BYE | 2 | Alis | 5 | Escape battle | | CHAT | 2 | Alis | 6 | Communicate with monsters | | HELP | 10 | Myau | 20 | Raises ATK of one friend | | FIRE | 4 | Alis, Noah | 12,1 | 10 Dmg to all foes (min 2) | | ROPE | 4 | Alis | 14 | Incapacitates one monster | | TELE | 4 | Noah | 8 | Communicate with monsters | | WALL | 10 | Myau | 12 | Party invincible for 1 turn | | WIND | 12 | Noah | 12 | 10 Dmg to all foes (min 3) | | PROT | 10 | Noah | 14 | Party invincible for 1 turn | | THUN | 16 | Noah | 18 | 30 Dmg to all foes | --------------------------------------------------------------- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- VII. BESTIARY -=-=-=-=-=-=-= Phantasy Star had a very impressive array of enemies and bosses for its time. Below are all of them, including the spoils victory over them entails. Their ability to speak (or lack thereof) is also noted, whether it be through the TALK command or a communicative spell. _______________ ______ _________ __________ ________ _______ | Enemy | HP | Exp. | Meseta | Item | Speak | |---------------|------|---------|----------|--------|-------| | Swarm | 8 | 2 | 3 | | | | Wing Eye | 11 | 2 | 6 | | | | Scorpion | 12 | 4 | 13 | | | | Maneater | 16 | 3 | 13 | | | | Gr.Slime | 18 | 4 | 8 | | | | Owl Bear | 18 | 5 | 12 | | | | G.Scorpi | 20 | 5 | 11 | | | | Scorpius | 22 | 8 | 27 | | | | Deadtree | 23 | 4 | 21 | | | | GiantFly | 25 | 7 | 32 | | | | Goldlens | 28 | 9 | 24 | | | | Rd.Slime | 29 | 11 | 31 | | | | Evildead | 30 | 14 | 8 | | | | N.Farmer | 38 | 5 | 8 | Cola | * | | Bl.Slime | 40 | 5 | 19 | | | | Crawler | 40 | 9 | 30 | | | | E.Farmer | 42 | 9 | 30 | Cola | * | | Fishman | 42 | 11 | 42 | | | | Tarantul | 50 | 10 | 51 | | * | | Were Bat | 50 | 11 | 63 | Flash | | | Wight | 50 | 18 | 40 | | | | Skeleton | 53 | 13 | 25 | | | | Barbrian | 54 | 10 | 89 | Cola | * | | Skull-En | 57 | 18 | 37 | | | | Marman | 58 | 14 | 43 | | | | Lich | 60 | 22 | 33 | | | | Manticor | 60 | 30 | 49 | | * | | Executer | 62 | 12 | 63 | | | | Shelfish | 62 | 16 | 46 | | | | Ant Lion | 66 | 8 | 7 | | | | Vampire | 67 | 15 | 71 | Flash | | | Ghoul | 68 | 16 | 26 | | | | Leech | 70 | 15 | 47 | | | | Dezorian | 76 | 18 | 105 | | * | | Sphinx | 78 | 21 | 58 | Flash | * | | Stalker | 79 | 22 | 87 | | | | Serpent | 80 | 23 | 96 | | | | Sandworm | 82 | 20 | 129 | | | | Evilhead | 86 | 20 | 136 | | * | | Zombie | 87 | 20 | 27 | | | | Ammonite | 90 | 19 | 71 | | | | Octopus | 90 | 20 | 64 | | | | Nessie | 93 | 28 | 101 | | | | Batalion | 100 | 21 | 59 | | | | Robotcop | 110 | 25 | 156 | | | | Sorcerer | 110 | 26 | 120 | | | | Wyvern | 110 | 26 | 125 | | | | Androcop | 120 | 29 | 123 | | | | Tarzimal | 125 | ?? | ??? | | * | | Horseman | 130 | 30 | 148 | | * | | Amundsen | 133 | 32 | 120 | | | | Marauder | 135 | 30 | 173 | | | | Magician | 138 | 32 | 187 | | | | Golem | 140 | 24 | 150 | | | | Frostman | 140 | 36 | 128 | | | | Gr.Dragn | 160 | 53 | 176 | | * | | Shadow | 165 | 60 | 0 | | * | | Gd.Dragn | 170 | 100 | 0 | | | | Rd.Dragn | 175 | 65 | 193 | | * | | Mammoth | 180 | 40 | 125 | | | | Reaper | 185 | 30 | 254 | | | | Centaur | 190 | 31 | 133 | | * | | Titan | 190 | 32 | 138 | | | | Medusa | 200 | 15 | 75 | | | | Wt.Dragn | 200 | 75 | 234 | | * | | CasbaDr. | 210 | 88 | 178 | | * | | Dr.Mad(boss)| 233 | 15 | 75 | | * | | Dr.Mad | 233 | 25 | 140 | | * | | Lassic | 238 | 0 | 0 | | * | | Saccubus | 255 | 10 | 0 | | | ------------------------------------------------------------ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- IX. MUCHO ARIGATO -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- A heaping tablespoon of muchas gracias go out to the following for making this FAQ possible. - James Maxlow of Phantasy-Star.net for permission to use information. - CJayC of www.gamefaqs.com for putting this thing up. His site gets more hits on a Sunday morning than mine does per year. - All of the gang at #p_r. - Sega, for making a game that doesn't suck (and an online sequel that rocks). - Brad Uhrig, for splitting that $12 Sega Genesis purchase with me so I could take the RF switch for use with my SMS, to get her humming again.
