How malleable can one piece of music be? Space Channel 5's soundtrack hints toward the answer by focusing almost entirely on variations and reworkings of Ken Woodman and His Piccadilly Brass' 1960s hit "Mexican Flyer." What's really surprising is how rarely United Game Artists' sound team repeats themselves here, since they created over a dozen songs all based on the one tune. Even better than a lack of repetition is the abundance of quality here; apart from the somewhat clunky Spaceport: Introducing Ulala!!, every song is tight and funky. The final trio of in-game songs (from Evila to Blank TV) give one of gaming's finest endgames its kick, especially Blank TV: Ulala's Support Chant, which is a stunning a capella rendition of Mexican Flyer that gets me every time. Both the game and the soundtrack are highly recommended.
