Nirvana
In Utero

A last stab at being uncommercial and not selling well by Nirvana before you-know-what happened. They were only half-successful; they got the "uncommercial" part right but sold millions anyway. One does wonder how they expected to be understood by titling an anti-rape song "Rape Me," and selling it to hundreds of thousands of high school kids who hadn't gotten to "irony" in English class yet. My own favorite here is "Frances Farmer," for obscure reasons I won't go into here.
