Given how many teen pop sensations (the cast of Lady Marmalade, Valeria, and so forth) are on board this album, it's surprising how much I like it. Of course, it helps that the movie is one of my favorites of the year (if not of all time) and the soundtrack does such a good job of recalling the movie to mind. The only complaint is that some of the movie's more interesting musical numbers aren't reproduced here at all, such as the Jim Broadbent-led versions of Like A Virgin or The Show Must Go On, while songs that play exceedingly minor parts such as Children of the Revolution and Diamond Dogs are present here in radically different incarnations. Not that those songs are bad in either the movie or the soundtrack, but it is enough to make one long for a second volume.
